95.East Meets West Through Buddhist Institute

East Meets West Through Buddhist Institute
By: Anne Reilly

The existence of a Buddhist organization in an Eastern European country may seem surprising. But Buddhism has come of age in the secularized West. Its reach is expanding beyond its original Eastern context and Hungary's East-West Research Institute is bringing this worldview to the rest of the globe.

Although Hungarian culture is largely influenced and informed by Christian values and perspectives, many Hungarians "have a traditional interest in Eastern cultures, because they are thought to have come from Inner Asia," said Tamas Agocs, director of the institute.

This may be why the only state-accredited Buddhist institute of higher education in Europe, the "Gate of the Dharma" Buddhist University, was founded in Budapest in 1991.

The university subsequently established the East-West Research Institute "to provide framework and conditions for scientific research into the possibilities of Buddhist education and the dissemination and application of Buddhist principles in the country," said Agocs.

As globalization continues to make the world smaller, participants strive to increase the dialogue between the "East" - the Asian cultures that have been shaped by Buddhist thought - and the "West" - the modern, scientific cultures that originated in Western Europe. With this goal in mind, they also work towards making the values of Buddhism known in the West.

Without forsaking the integrity of Buddhist views, values and practices, Agocs said their goal is "to enter the East-West dialogue not just in order to find interesting parallels and differences between Eastern and Western discourses, but with a view towards the constructive and creative application of Buddhist principles in all walks of life."

According to Agocs, the open attitude of Buddhist thought is the ideal starting point for furthering the science-and-religion discussion.

"Buddhism shares many methods with Western science. They both emphasize the unbiased examination, thoughtful analysis and critical testing of experience," said Agocs.

However, the direction of the approach is different, he said. "The basic difference is that Buddhist inquiry is directed mainly inwards, towards the consciousness, while scientific research is mostly targeted outside."

In addition to participating in the science-and-religion dialogue and organizing conferences on the intersection between the East and the West, the institute promotes research on the study of the Buddhist tradition and explores Buddhism as an applied science that can provide answers to challenges faced in the world today.

Current programs include the Milky Way project, which is establishing a Buddhist school. The institute is also sponsoring research on the mind and the application of Buddhist mind training methods to psychology and community building. Eventually, Agocs said he would like to build cooperative relationships between the center and other international organizations for interdisciplinary research projects.

94.Basic Yoga Poses (Asanas)

Basic Yoga Poses (Asanas)
In most forms of Yoga there are three components to the practice; breathing, concentration and physical poses also known as asanas. The two poses below are the most common asanas used in Western Yoga practice today.

Padma-Asana: Probably the most famous and well-known pose; the Padma-asana is referred to as the Lotus Position. The root of the words to this pose mean to "bend", and "snake". Think of it as the maneuvering of the body into a position that requires the flexibility and smoothness of a snake.

To practice this pose, sit down and place the right foot on the left thigh and the left foot on the right thigh. The soles of the feet should be facing towards the sky. Next, the palms of the hands are also turned toward the sky and placed on the corresponding thigh. It is a difficult pose to retain for long periods of time if the body is not properly conditioned. It is therefore paramount to begin with short periods and work into a longer time frame.

Sirsha-Asana: The Headstand Pose. The benefits of the notorious head stand pose are to increase the physical and mental health of the person practicing it. The pose encourages balance and stability on the physical level and mental acuity on the intellectual level. Additionally, it improves blood flow throughout the body and helps to decrease tension and stress in the lower limbs.

To practice this pose, begin in a kneeling position. Lean forward to place the arms, from hands to elbows, flat on the floor, and interlock the fingers of both hands. The head should be placed between the hands, flat on the floor. Push up from the kneeling position on the tips of the toes keeping head on the floor. Slowly bring the legs into an extended, upright hand stand position, keeping the entire body aligned, straight and balanced. Special breathing techniques are also employed during this pose which enhances the overall effect of the asana.

93.My Beginning Yoga Experience

As I walked out of the Bikram Yoga studio toward my car after my first class, I found myself declaring, "If I can actually do this yoga, it will totally change my whole life." I had only been able to attempt half the postures, with the rest of the time lying down, just dealing with the heated, humid room. But it was a revelation as to the sorry state of my body's condition, and the pathetic condition of my mind-body connection.
I had already made the firm decision to do yoga class every day for two months, after reading Bikram Choudhury's introductory yoga book. He says, "Give us two months. We will change you." After living with years of back pain due to compressed lumbar discs and a sedentary lifestyle, I was ready for that change--so ready, in fact, I was willing to subject my de-conditioned body to 90 minutes of vigorous cardiovascular activity in 105 heat and 60% humidity (making the "apparent temperature" somewhere around 145). But the prospective discipline of it appealed to me, and soon I was actually enjoying the gentle torture of it, as I began to move muscles, bones and cartilage that hadn't been moved in years.

Beyond the rewards of seeing my body stretch and reach new ranges of motion in class, it was after and between classes where the payoffs truly lay. Bending over to pick up something no longer hurt, standing up after sitting for a while no longer involved pain and stiffness, and I began noticing how good I felt instead of how bad.

Of course, getting to these improvements took a while; and although I had committed to two months of daily practice, it has now been nearly eight months, and I can now say yoga is an indispensible part of my life. This path has blatantly announced to me how I had incrementally reduced my own range of motion with each tiny discomfort, each injury, each bout of stiffness, in an attempt to protect myself from future pain. It is a common life strategy, but a very wrongheaded one. The body needs to increase its range of motion over time, and each discomfort or injury points the way. As the World's Stiffest Person at 50, I was on the fast track to being a crippled old man by 60.

I drew a valuable conclusion from this, that all the little aches and pains and microconditions we had as twentysomethings, if not dealt with in a broad and holistic way, are the exact pains and conditions that amplify over time leading us to our ultimate demise. From this perspective, what is commonly referred to as "aging," is actually more like an excuse for not answering the body's calls for help early on. I'm just not buying the "I'm just getting too old for this" refrain I hear from my friends. Time, friction, and gravity will take their respective tolls, but only with permission from you. If I end up dying at 94, I would rather have gotten there vital, active and pain-free, instead of feeble, crippled, and tormented.

The main thing I've learned from my beginning yoga experience is that it takes MUCH MORE WORK than I thought to reverse my past slothfulness, and much more diligence on the day-to-day to maintain what gains I have acheived. Bikram refers to the "body's bank account." You invest into the account with yoga, and then spend the account when not doing yoga. Of course, I found I was sorely and deplorably in DEBT, and am only now seeing the light at the end of that tunnel, striving for the day I can touch my forehead to my toes, rest my leg on my shoulder, and nap on my back with my head on my feet.

SEVEN MORE THINGS I'VE LEARNED IN BIKRAM YOGA

1. If yoga turns it on, yoga will turn it off. I've had many classes where a muscle or joint will "release" (I used to wrongly identify it as "strain"), causing pain and stiffness or soreness after class. By the end of the next class, invariably, that soreness and pain disappears.
2. Your body is stronger than you think it is, and you have more energy than you think you do. One day in class I decided to completely ignore my thoughts as to what I could or couldn't do in class, and was surprised to find a whole

92.How Doing Yoga For Golf On The Ball Can Quickly Improve Wome

How Doing Yoga For Golf On The Ball Can Quickly Improve Wome
Are you getting tighter by the day? Do you feel like your swing is out of balance and not very stable? Doing yoga with a ball will help.

Improving flexibility is a well-known thought for most golfers, including women golfers. But why are women golfers hesitant to stretch regularly? Could it be that its boring?

There is a growing population of female golfers who are taking up yoga. Yoga is a great resource for not only improving your flexibility but strengthening your core and improving your balance for a more stable golf swing.

Thats why adding some interest by incorporating a stability ball in the routine might increase your interest in doing yoga.

Using a stability ball in a yoga routine can add some visual interest as well as challenge. The stability ball by itself works the core and stabilizing muscles of the entire body. Add some yoga exercises and youve got a great workout that will dramatically improve your golf game.

GOLF TIP: The Simple Exercise That Helps You Relieve Back Pain -- and stress on your hips when you play.

This exercise targets the muscle groups in your hamstrings, glutes and hips. Theses are key muscles to strengthen to not only reduce back pain, but improve golf posture and stability in your swing. Here's the exercise that will solve that problem:

I call it the "Bridge On The Ball" It requires the use of a stability ball. Sit on the ball and roll out until only your head and upper back are on the ball. Now raise your hips up until they are parallel with the ground. Hold this position for up to 60 seconds and repeat 3 times. That's all there is to it! Do this exercise everyday and you will notice a marked improvement in lower back pain and stability in your golf swing.

Consider this: It's proven that tension in the golf swing is a killer. Really pay attention to how you feel on the course. Standing over a shot that you dont feel comfortable with. Thats a common scenario in golf. The result is undo tension - causing mishits and higher scores.

Being able to trust your body during every shot will greatly reduce the amount of tension your produce in your swing give you the best chance at solid-ball contact and greater distance and accuracy.

91.Yogalates for Golf

To swing a golf club simply rotate back then rotate forward while shifting your weight accordingly around the axis of motion of each hip. To this simple version of the swing, add a few things such as a good grip, proper weight transfer, maintain spine angles, stay balanced, correct tempo, proper alignment, etc, and youve got every reason to expect a single digit handicap. Golfers for the ages have pondered how something so simple could become so complex.

The simpler and more automatic the golf swing, the greater the chance of having a successful result. Physical training incorporating moves, weight transfer, and body positions consistent with a proper swing will help achieve a swing with no conscious thoughts other than where the ball is going.

YOGALATES FOR GOLF is the first golf fitness program combining Yoga and Pilates aimed at improving the golfers ability to play without the negative influence of swing thoughts.

The Train To Engrain philosophy of GoLo GolFitness has been incorporated into foot positioning, weight transfer, spine angles, posture, as well as stretches, strengthening and balance activities.

Yoga and Pilates are often associated with golf training but never in the technically correct manner associated with YOGALATES FOR GOLFsm. Exercising along with the instructor 2-3 times weekly will result in physical changes that will improve the golfers ability to perform the most efficient and effective swing. Neuro-muscular education will also occur and begin to improve technical aspects of the swing without conscious thought.

YOGALATES FOR GOLFsm is fun, effective and quite a physical challenge. Golf swings will improve, but also expect to see functional gains throughout the day as endurance, balance, and flexibility improvements develop greater movement capabilities and positive postural changes.

90 The Power Of The Positive

Submitted By: Community Soul You and me... we can choose to be happy or not. We can choose to succeed or fail, scald, frown on or blame others. We can choose to complicate life or simplify it. There is no doubt the responsibility is ours.

Abraham Lincoln once said, ‘A man is just about as happy as he makes up his mind to be’ and Dr Wayne Dyer and Deepak Chopra appear to agree.

Both Dyer and Chopra say that we have, on average 60,000 to 62,000 thoughts each day. Around 4,000 of these are positive, the remainder are negative. This means that, if we want to advance ourselves or enhance our well-being, the balance between positive and negative in our lives is most likely tipped in the wrong direction. In other words we are making up our minds to be unhappy.

To be happy we have to begin to reverse the cycle. To begin this we have to look at what we’re doing.

Ghandi once said, ‘Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.’ It is simple wisdom from a wise man, but what will taking his words on board mean?

I think what Ghandi’s words could mean is that we need to become much more aware of what we do. Many of the negative thoughts we have don’t even originate within us, but come to us as a result of what we do. They enter your mind through outside sources, and we allow this to happen because we’ve never stopped to think.

Here are some quick questions to help. Mark them 1-10, ten being the highest.

1. How positive are the TV programmes you watch? Do they uplift you, make you laugh or inspire change?

2. How positive is the news you watch or read? Is it based on war and scandal or peace, love and harmony?

3. How positive is your music? Is it all about break-up, anger and dysfunction or love and hope?

4. How positive are the movies you watch? Are they about a better world or about destruction and violence?

5. How positive are your friends? Do they moan or look to create change things for the better?

Why are these important questions?

They’re important questions because we think ‘I want to be happy thoughts’ and perhaps often give off that ’I want to be happy vibe’ but then we go and contradict what we say and what we think by what we do. TV, radio, news media, musical lyrics, movies and friends or family talking about woes all have a profound influence on how positive we feel. And if our life isn’t going where we hoped it would, then we need to change the things that influence our minds.

How?

We can change what influences us by learning to manage the incoming content to our minds by our choice. Turn on the TV now. Watch it for 2 minutes and decide if watching this TV programme will help you achieve anything one of those dreams you keep locked away in the back of your mind. Pick up a newspaper, hold it by your heart and ask, Will I feel uplifted if I read this? Ask: Is this music about happiness or sadness?

Once we become more aware of what were taking in we have the power to choose. We can choose a positive news publication to read, change our internet default setting to a site that uplifts, encourages and empowers, tune into a radio station which will help us be more, find positive books and movies to watch… The list goes on.

I hope this article has been useful to you.

89 Time And Space: New Meanings For Old Concepts Of Reality

Time And Space: New Meanings For Old Concepts Of Reality
by: Ikey Benney

The Basic Concepts of "TMT" Teaching (An excerpt of Chapter 2 of "TMT Power Secrets" Book-2)

Introducing some basic "TMT" Teachings...

"TMT" means "Transcendental Mental Technology, the science and technology of known (physical) and unknown (spiritual) realms of life and reality.

It is simply: spirituality + science.

What Is Time, Mind, And Body, The Inner And Outer Worlds?

Time = A period of Infinity.

Infinity = non-ending time.

Eternity = Infinite infinities!

The spirit (inner) world is the same as the outer physical world.

The spirit world is just more refined and subtle and our senses can't detect it.

Mind is made of 5 senses, through which we detect things.

That which our 5 senses can detect is that which we know and which we call the physical world.

But that which our 5 senses can't detect, we call the inner spirit world.

So, it is the mind (5 senses) that cause a distinction between the two.

Both the inner (spirit) world and the outer physical worlds are one and the same.

Man with his mind is just standing between the two worlds.

Through mind (senses), we move outside to the physical world or inside to the inner world.

But in the average human, the senses move outward, outside into the physical world.

The movement inside into the inner world is not happening because the inner senses are dormant and not functioning.

To become spiritual means to activate these inner senses so that they will start working and start moving inside so that we'll know the inner world too.

But the senses can only move in one direction at a time.

It can't move in two directions at the same time.

To make them move inside, we must make them to stop moving outside.

Then the same energy in the senses will begin to move inside and light up and make the inner world known.

So, if you wish to know the inner world, you must withdraw from the outer world.

Therefore, Mind is the vehicle to move into outer world.

And "no mind" is the vehicle to move into inner world.

The technical name for "no mind" is "MEDITATION"

The greatest teacher about yogic meditation is Patanjali.

The greatest teacher of all types of meditations in modern times is Osho Rajneesh.

There are different types of meditations and yogas: laya yoga, mantra yoga, hatha yoga, tantric yoga, Jnana yoga, karma yoga, Bhakti yoga and raja yoga.

The world is mind, because mind is 5 senses and it is through those 5 senses that we know the world, that we see, feel, touch, hear and taste things.

If the 5 senses stop functioning, the physical world will disappear for us.

Therefore the world is the 5 senses = the mind.

Therefore if you want to withdraw from the outer world, so that you can move inside into the inner worlds, then withdraw from the mind and the 5 senses and the outer world will disappear for you.

The energy of the 5 senses that were moving outside into the outer world will change direction and start moving inside into the inner world.

The inner world is the unknown dimension of man.

It is what we call the spiritual man.

The spirit world.

But we have the wrong ideas of it.

The spirit world is also here and now. It is not far off in another world.

It is not a heaven in the sky.

Heaven is a planet (aka Marduk, Vulcan, 12th planet etc) where the anunnakis live. (see Zacharia Sitchin's books)

When we die, we don't go to a heaven.

No, we don't go to a hell either!

We remain here and now, in the 4th dimension.

The spirit world is here also, but in the 4th dimension.

Its direction is opposite to this outer world.

It is the subtle world.

It is the other part of this world that our senses can't detect because our senses are moving outward.

To detect the spirit world, you have to make the energy of your senses to change direction and begin to move inside.

For example a ghost is an entity that is here and now but in the 4th dimension.

It has a body.

But to us in the 3rd dimension (physical world), it appears as if the body is transparent because the 4th dimension is opposite to us, who are in the 3rd dimension.

To the ghost, we also appear not to be real. Our bodies will also appear transparent and made of light.

So, the reality of matter for both dimensions are relative to each other.

When we die, we go to the 4th dimension.

When we die, it is only our body in the 3rd dimension that has died.

Our bodies in other dimensions continue, as well as our minds.

What we call a ghost, is the body of dead person in the 4th dimension.

We're multi-dimensional, and has no beginning or end. Our body has no beginning or an end.

But the average person, is ignorant of this.

The average person exists only in the 3rd and 4th dimension.

The average person doesn't know about higher dimensions, beyond the 3rd or lower dimensions below the 3rd.

Only an enlightened person has such knowledge because enlightenment or true spirituality means the attainment and the awareness of all dimensions of existence.

What happens to the average person is that he lives in the 3rd dimension without awareness.

So when he dies, he continues to be unaware, and will not know the 4th dimension.

When he dies in the 4th dimension, he is born again into the 3rd dimension.

So, the existence of an average unenlightened person is limited to the movement between the 4th and 3r dimensions.

This is the circle of birth and death.

This is bondage to nature.

This bondage to nature is because of our desires.

And desires are there because of the mind.

Desires = mind compel us to be born into the 3rd dimension.

When we stop desires, the mind will dissolve and our bondage to nature will dissolve and we don't have to continue coming back again and again to the 3rd dimension (this world)

Then we will move on to higher dimensions of existence and also enter into higher bodies.

You're in this world today because of your past desires and wishes.

Those desires are in your unconscious mind.

They create your body and life.

Your desires and wishes create your bodies and life in the 3rd dimension.

During your life in the 3rd dimension, which is this world, you create more desires.

When you die in this 3rd dimension, this world, you move into the 4th dimension.

But you're not aware of it.

You don't know it.

Because the inner senses with which you can know it are not functioning.

For this reason, you live your life in the 4th dimension without knowing it.

It is similar to somebody who is born into the 3rd dimension, this world, but deaf, dumb, blind, mute and paralyzed.

Such a person will be in this world but will not know this world because the senses and organs he needs to know this world are not functioning.

So what we call life or the existence of the average person is movement from 4th dimension to the 3rd dimension, back and forth because we're still rooted desires and this world is made up of desires.

It is desires that keep us bound in the world, the 3rd dimension .

When desires stop, mind will dissolve, and we are free to move into the 4th dimension and others higher.

This is the basic teaching of Guatma the Buddha, one of the greatest philosophers who has ever lived on earth.

But just because desires are the bondage doesn't mean that desires are evil like some organized religions have been teaching.

Mind is the mother of time.

And "no mind" is the mother of infinity.

Beyond infinity is Eternity (consciousness)

The opposite of time is not infinity.

The opposite of time is "no-time".

The opposite of time is not infinity because infinity itself is a form of time. Infinity is time without an end, a no-ending time, so infinity is not the opposite of time.

What is the opposite of time?

The opposite of time is "no-time" or "no-mind".

Infinity is like a circle: no beginning and no ending. \

Eternity is like a globe.

(Notice: IT IS NOT A GLOBE, THIS IS JUST AN ANALOGY!)

It has no dimension.

It has no structure. It has no boundaries. It can't be described.

That is why Lao Tzu said "The Tao that can be told is not the real Tao"

It has no volume. It doesn't occupy space because it is space.

There is nothing beyond Eternity. It is the ultimate.

Therefore in reality, a straight line doesn't exit.

Only circles exist. And every straight line is part of a circle.

The same goes with time.

Time doesn't exist. Only infinity exists. Every time is part of infinity....

88 Chiang Mai, Thailand’s Temple of the Dogs

Chiang Mai, Thailand’s Temple of the Dogs
by: Nola Lee Kelsey

Into the Arms of Buddha

It was 5 p.m. and I was stalking an angel on temple grounds. As the rain started, I wondered if she would show herself at all. Chiang Mai’s rain patterns are directly correlated with the contents of my purse. The resulting meteorological phenomena means the rain could stop in a matter of seconds or pour down for days, depending on whether or not I’d brought my umbrella. I had not.

Squinting into the droplets, I glared up at the massive Chedi, a Lanna-style stupa which draws in visitors from across Northern Thailand. Sure it’s impressive, but what I want to know is: How can you have such a large building sitting there for 700 years and not install any doors? Surely it has rained here before.

Where to hide? No way would I take shelter in the two beautiful little buildings in front of me. Stunningly designed, absolutely! But each houses a wax replica of an elderly monk sitting in a clear box. File them under “way too real looking” to pass time with. What can I say? Lack of blinking disturbs me. Beside, if wax can achieve the lotus position, why can’t I?

To escape the deluge, my shelter took the form of a gazebo housing three large Buddhas. I would not be alone. One by one, temple residents trickled in. The first went straight to a mat he obviously kept laid out for these moments. Two more just sat down and licked themselves. By the time the skies opened up completely, three more temple dogs had meandered into the shelter.

Carrying dog cookies is just something I do. I could explain myself, but people either get it or never will. I tossed five treats out and turned to the sixth dog, Lek (Thai for little). She had vanished. Not possible. Would she go back out in the rain? Is there a dog door in the side of the Chedi?

I surrendered Lek’s cookie to an antique looking Weimaraner. Predictably, that’s when I spotted her. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed her sitting in the right hand of a Buddha. She yawned, nestled perfectly into Buddha’s arms and fell fast asleep. After six years of visiting Wat Chedi Luang, the temple still brings a grin to my face. Must be why I keep coming back.

Angels of Chedi Luang

Actually, as the donation box says, “It all started about ten years ago.” Ajarn Rosocon, a teacher at Chiang Mai’s Rajabaht University, decided to make the dogs of Wat Chedi Luang and the adjoining Wat Phan Tau her mission. Ajarn is Thai for teacher. Her best lessons were taught at this temple complex. Out of a potential hell these unique Buddhist sites have been transformed into a sort of canine Nirvana.

Initially, students and friends helped Ajarn Rosocon care for the dogs. They fed, sterilized, treated mange, vaccinated… whatever they could manage from the pennies (baht) they scraped together. The group was determined that the dogs of Chedi Luang and Phan Tau not suffer the life faced by so many abandoned and sick temple dogs across SE Asia.

In 2005 Ajarn Rosocon unexpectedly died. A friend, Ann Pierce, and another devoted friend/student Khun Soonthree stepped in. Adopting Rosocon’s dream as their own, they went forward, honoring a friend’s memory by helping the helpless. Ultimately, Khun Soonthree became in many eyes the “Angel of Chedi Luang.”

Touring the Temples

Wat Chedi Luang has become a refuge not just for dogs, but for all animal lovers. If travelers become overwhelmed by the sight and plight of street dogs or simply need a quiet escape they visit this ‘feel good’ temple. Try it yourself. Play tourist, take photos, pat a willing pup, or bring a picnic – it’s all good. Then at 6 p.m. watch for the angel. Over a year after Ajarn Rosocon death, Khun Soonthree still feeds and cares for the temple dogs.

Word has it she never misses a day. She was there in the rainy season when her own home flooded several times. She was there in the storm when Lek and I sought shelter. Her bright yellow rain slicker and massive pot of rice mix carried her through the tempest. If it is 6 o’clock in Chiang Mai, she’s there right now.

Most people visit Wat Chedi Luang’s temple complex for the impressive ancient Chedi. In addition, its beautiful grounds are perfect for strolling, quietly removed from the city’s frenzy. Vendors offer food and cool drink. Trees and benches offer hospitable shade. The adjoining Wat Phan Tau casts a luminous teak glow over the Buddha images it houses.

Better still, the aptly named “Monk Chat” area offer travelers a welcoming invitation to pull up a chair and, quite obviously, chat with monks. A casual atmosphere where international visitors just hang out with Buddhist monks is a fabulous forum for asking questions and learning about one another’s lives. In the background the voices of novice monks echo outward from classroom windows.

Who’s Who?

Of course, for a few of us the temples house one more special treasure – the dogs. Not all are social. Not all are loyal. Some are downright ornery. But to know the “who’s who” of Chedi Luang canines adds to the fun of any visit. True most tourists barely notice them – except to do a quick sidestep away. Like many regulars, however, I’ve given most nicknames.

Take Ren and Stumpy for example. Ren, a diminutive twig of a dog, is the duo’s personality. Stumpy, who has a front leg contorted up underneath, provides a bit of size (a valuable asset in the world of temple dog politics) to the team. Side by side the pair can be found on a building patio overlooking the Chedi's north face.

Ren works her magic, charming the visitors with enthusiastic greetings. Then Stumpy shows his handicap, Abracadabra! Any traveler with half a heart makes a beeline for the ubiquitous ‘5 baht meat-on-a-stick’ vendor. “No need to heat it sir.”

Next, is Lady. She works with a local artist by delicately charming customers to his postcard rack. From there they get a close-up look at his lovely hand sketched works. I suspect Lady pulls in a commission.

Friendly Little Lek hovers at ordinary in the looks department. But every dog is beautiful when they sleep in Buddha’s arms.

Not all is perfect. When I first saw Hiccup, I thought he had just been poisoned. Now I know the perpetual hack must be a medical problem. A bone lodged somewhere or… I can not say. While not overly social, Hiccup is stunningly photogenic.

At the front entrance of Chedi Luang are the three Golden Boys. At least I think they are boys. They rarely stand. This is the first place Khun Soonthree feeds each evening. Looking at the girth of the Golden Boys, it’s a tad surprising there is any food left for any other temple dogs.

Across from them lives Lucy – the Teddy Bear dog. Had you seen her before her haircut, you would have expected to find seams and a price tag.

No one knows exactly how many dogs live at Chedi Luang, 60+ perhaps. Other notable characters include Cookie Monster, whose cantankerous attitude and dull looks are well compensated for by the fact that he is the only one who actually likes the dull old dry dog cookies I bring. Apparently others prefer Khun Soonthree’s cooking to mine.

Living on the north face of the Chedi is Scar and her three puppies. Some dogs turn up at the temple pregnant. Still, her puppies Goldie, Blackie, and Coco Puff are well cared for.

The latest I have notice is named, “Oh Crap, Where Are My Ears?” Oh Crap…, or Ears for short, must be an abandoned pet. He is way too forlorn looking. It’s as though he desperately wants a master. However, he’s willing to settle for jerky treats - or bigger ears.

Chubby, a pseudo red Chow, and Pigeon Chaser top off the list of charmers over at Wat Phan Tau. Pigeon Chaser will pass any domestic chicken, but heaven help the wild birds if he ever sprouts wings. The young monks at Phan Tau are especially loving toward their smaller population of temple dogs. It is truly a joy to watch them interact. Saffron robes and happy tails flourish side by side.

The influence Chedi Luang has on animal lovers is best summed up by Ann Pierce. A former volunteer with the dogs, Ann has returned to California, but wrote this in an email interview:

“I cannot begin to articulate the impact the dogs, Ajarn Rosocon, Khun Soonthree, Wat Chedi Luang and all the other people I met through my time in Chiang Mai has had on me. I’m a very different person because of my experiences. My dream is to one day move back to Chiang Mai and continue helping the animals, no matter how frustrating it is at times.”

Getting There

You can take a Tuk Tuk to visit Wat Chedi Luang. Most drivers know of this popular temple. On foot enter the old city from the famous Tha Phae Gate (east moat gate) and continue straight up Ratchadamnoen Road about four blocks to the first street light – Phra Pokklao Rd. Turn left. You’ll immediately see the spectacular Teak Wood Temple of Wat Phan Tau on your right. Take a look inside. Wat Chedi Luang’s larger complex is located next door.

Please remember Wats are Buddhist Temples first and foremost. Dress conservatively and behave respectfully. They don’t have to let the visitors or the dogs stay. Honor yourself by the example you set.

How Can You Help?

Visit Chedi Luang, have a great time, then spread the word.

Feeding starts at the main entrance between 5:30 and 6:00 each night. Stop by and show Khun Soonthree your appreciation of her work.

Please make a donation in one of the temples three Dog Donation Boxes, set up around the Chedi. Your money goes to food, vaccinations, mange treatment, sterilization of females (and males when it can be afforded), and general care.

The main Wat is currently undergoing a massive restoration. Making a donation to support the construction work, the temple and the temple’s school is good for all the residents – two and four legged (or 3.5 – sorry Stumpy).

Getting the Most from Your Visit!

Never approach any dog that seems reluctant. Get acquainted slowly with the friendly animals. Their continued socialization, or at least apathy to people, keeps them from wearing out their welcome at the temple.

Do not bring too many good tasting cookies: bacon, pork rings, a side of beef… The bigger dogs will follow and fights can ensue with defenseless smaller ones. Dry old dog cookies rate low on the taste scale. In other words, they are a perfect cheap way to give snacks to those that will eat them eventually. If in doubt, donate the money instead. It goes to the right place.

Helping Dogs in Chiang Mai

If you live in Thailand, consider helping change the world one temple at a time. Get advice form angels and/or adopt your own temple – with permission of the monks. Make it a family, business, class or club project. Work with a reputable vet. Dr. Nook in Chiang Mai is aces!

Other organizations that help pets in the Chiangmai area temples include Lanna Dog Rescue and Care for Dogs. Both have web sites and are always looking for volunteers or donations of funds, foods and materials.

In addition, Care for Dogs also has a wonderful shelter offering adoptions of healthy rescued dogs and puppies to good homes. Remember, for each new pet that finds a family, space is made for a suffering dog to be brought into their facility. What a beautiful way to help one - dog at a time.

87 The Sights of Bangkok in Thailand

The Sights of Bangkok in Thailand
by: Clint Leung

One of the most popular destinations in Asia to visit over recent years has been Thailand. This of course has also coincided with the booming popularity of Thai cuisine around the world. Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, is the main entry point where the vast majority of tourists to Thailand will use.

Bangkok is a very interesting city because in addition to the usual modern buildings of offices, hotels and shopping centers, there are also about 400 exotic Thai temples that seem to stick out among the urban landscape. There are Thai citizens on the streets dressed in modern business clothing as well as Buddhist monks in saffron robes. Yet this is what part of Thailand is. The traditional mixed in with the modern. In fact, it’s the traditional attractions that make Thailand so magical. The temples are sights that one just cannot see in the western world. They are like objects that popped out of an Asian fairy tale.

Like many other large Asian cities, Bangkok is congested with traffic, people and pollution. In fact, the air can be bad enough that there are locals wearing surgical masks in the streets. With an average annual temperature of 28 degrees Celsius or 83 degrees Fahrenheit, it can be somewhat uncomfortable outside for some tourists, especially those from northern climates. Also beware that there will be people on the streets who will try to hustle tourists and direct them to their own businesses and tours. But unlike places in the Caribbean, Thais are polite and not aggressive people. For example, once upon arrival at the international airport, there will be people within the terminal including the ones at the booths who will be offering taxi transportation to your hotel. Although these are legit, they will charge a premium compared to the taxis waiting outside the terminal. There is a similar situation at the hotels. The taxis waiting right outside the main hotel entrances do seem to quote more than those waiting on the side streets just further down. The three-wheeled ‘tuk tuk’ vehicles also vary a lot so it may be wise to ask for quotes from a few drivers rather than taking the first one you see. The tuk tuks are a fun ride by the way so they should be experienced at least once while in Bangkok. The city also has various public buses and river taxis which are long boats used on the river canal system. A nice way to spend some time is to take a ride on one of these river taxis to cruise the canals which some refer to as the ‘Venice of the East’.

The Grand Palace is probably the most visited attraction in Bangkok. This complex is surrounded by walls built in 1783 and contains government offices, royal residences monuments and the Emerald Buddha Chapel. The Royal Chapel which contains the Emerald Buddha is the monarch’s private chapel. The Buddha itself is actually a one piece jade sitting on top of a golden altar. It’s not a large Buddha but it is very special. Apparently, they change the Buddha’s clothing which is also made of gold on a seasonal basis. There are numerous monuments on the grounds that are dedicated to past monarchs. Walls with large mythological scenes are displayed throughout. The buildings and monuments within the Grand Palace have some very striking colors including golds and greens. Gold color is used quite a lot and the distinctively curved Thai roofs on the buildings are very detailed. Equally stunning are some of the interiors of these buildings with their magnificent rooms and halls used for different ceremonies and events. Some of these halls have special royal altars.

One temple not to miss is Wat Pho which is the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. It features a giant Buddha lying on its side. Even the soles of this Buddha’s feet have very intricately detailed designs. Other nice temples to see are Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) and Wat Benchamabophit (Marble Temple). The Wat Pho temple has traditional Thai massage services which are very popular among tourists. Other temples such as Wat Mahathat and Wat Parinayok also have Thai massages available. The Royal Barges or long boats which are used during ceremonies on the river are also nice to see. The details put into decorating these boats are just remarkable.

For wildlife enthusiasts, there’s the Pasteur Institute’s Snake Farm where poisonous snakes are fed daily and visitors can watch handlers milk cobras for their venom. There is also the world’s largest Crocodile Farm. The national sport of Thai kickboxing can be seen at two different stadiums in Bangkok. Both the Ratchadamnoen and Lumphini stadiums feature events throughout the week on different days. Thai theatre and traditional dance are very interesting to watch as cultural entertainment. These can be seen at theatres as well as some of the top hotels in the city.

Bangkok has some good shopping opportunities especially for jewelry, handicrafts and textiles including silks as well as cottons. As in other locations in Asia, vendors in the streets will expect some bargaining of prices where the retail stores have fixed prices. Just like in Hong Kong, Bangkok has many custom tailors who can make suits, shirts and dresses for clients within 24 hours. Some will even delivery the finished clothing to your hotel free of charge.

There are some general guidelines of etiquette in Thailand that should be followed by all visitors. The Thai royal family is revered in this country so no outsider should ever make any even slightly negative remarks about the country’s monarchy. Temples should not be entered unless one is covered with long pants or skirts. Shorts and shoulderless tops are not permitted in temples. Footwear is always removed prior to entering any temple. Images and statues of Buddha, even postcards, are considered sacred in Thailand so one should never climb on one or do anything that will show disrespect. Public displays of affection between men and women are also frowned upon. Of course this seems to be a complete contradiction to Bangkok’s famous red light and adult entertainment districts such as Patpong. But this is yet another example of the contrast that’s found in Thailand.

The attractions in Bangkok warrant a few days stay in the city before heading out to other parts of Thailand where there’s much less pollution and more beautiful natural scenery. Bangkok has good air connections with other Asian destinations as well so it can easily be fit into a larger tour of Asia.

86 Massage Oils Can Elevate the Healing Properties of Massage

Massage oils are a staple for many masseuses. Not only can they heighten the massage experience by offering aromatherapy benefits in addition to allowing for greater ease of movement over the body, but many massage oils are believed to contain healing properties for everything from breakouts to arthritis. As a part of the art and science of massage for centuries, it's no wonder that massage oils continue to be a must-have for massage therapists all over the world.

Challenges of Working with Massage Oils

One of the biggest challenges of working with massage oil is the skin irritation factor. Although there certainly are some massage oil types that are gentler on the skin and preferred by professionals, each person's skin is different. What works wonderfully for one client may cause skin breakouts or an allergic reaction on another.

Feeling greasy after a massage is something that almost no client wants, especially if that grease will rub off onto their clothes and leave hard-to-get-rid-of stains. For this reason, many massage therapists prefer oils that absorb quickly and easily into the skin, despite their need for constant re-application.

Storage and length of shelf life are also important considerations. Oils with high levels of vitamin E and those that have been cold-pressed tend to store well over long periods of time. For all other types of oils, the addition of vitamin E or storage in a cool, dry place can help to increase shelf life.

Base Oils

All massage oils are made up of a base (or carrier) oil, which is considered the starting point for any massage oil mixture. Base oils are derived from either mineral oils or vegetable oils. Mineral oils, which are extracted from petroleum, tend to have a longer shelf life and offer the right amount of fluidity over the skin, but they do contain synthetic materials. These are more likely to cause reactions on the skin, and some people prefer the more natural approach of vegetable oils. Because vegetable oils are made from plant products, they do “go bad” faster than mineral oils, but they are easily absorbed into the skin and mix well with other oils.

Of the base oils, sweet almond oil tends to be the favorite of the majority of massage therapists. As the name suggests, it is derived from almonds, so it isn't good for people with nut allergies. However, it is one of the most inexpensive products on the market and its absorption rate is ideal for human skin. It doesn't have to be constantly reapplied, but it won't linger after the massage to leave marks on clothes or chairs.

However, there are countless other base oil options on the market. Many companies offer a generic massage oil base, while others sell specific oils (such as sunflower, jojoba, apricot kernel, and many others). Each of these carries its own healing properties and uses, so many massage therapists keep a wide array of choices on hand.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are any oils that are derived from plants, including trees, roots, and seeds. They are typically added in small amounts to the base oil for aromatherapy or healing properties. For example, lavender and chamomile oil may be added to provide a relaxing smell or, when combined, they can be used to treat eczema. Essential oils can be purchased either in concentrate and added to a base oil or they can be purchased as part of a “massage oil” package.

The art of combining essential oils for these types of uses is actually a study all on its own, and many massage practitioners develop their own unique combinations as part of their sales angle. Recipes for the different types of oil mixtures are also widely available, and are best for those just starting out.

Fragrance Oils

Fragrance oils are those that are used to add a smell to essential oils for aromatherapy purposes. They are almost never used on their own, since they tend to be of poorer overall quality and can actually be harmful to the skin when used in concentrate. They differ from essential oils primarily in their synthetic composition.

Choosing a Massage Oil

Although massage oils are used primarily to facilitate the movement of a massage therapist's hands over the skin, they also can be used as a way to treat the skin. Dry skin, skin that is prone to breakouts, and deep muscle pains can all be treated using different types of oils.

When you consider that oils can be mixed and matched, there are literally hundreds of options for massage therapists to choose from. Each type of oil has its pros and cons, so it is important to consider the type of massage and clients you work with before using any specific one.

84 Food For Health - Thai Food

There are no less than 200-300 Thai dishes. Each has its own characteristics in flavor and feature.

It is not difficult to cook in the pre-historic era. Humans began their eating with raw trees: flowers, leaves, roots and bulbs. After having tasted the vagetables’bland flavor, they added some sour ones to make tastier, or mixed variety of vegetables. Later, they knew how to make simple cooking, for example, burning vegetables or putting rice into roasted bamboo (which was called “kaawlaam” or a glutinous rice with coconut cream topping stuffed in a bamboo section and roasted). As the time passed by, they knew how to cook in various ways: frying, making soup or curry, steaming, making yam (salad) and preserving.

Food cooking is both science and art. Some foods need time, man power and delicacy in cooking, including an artistic decoration. Cooperation in cooking helps create unity and warmth among family members.

The process of Thai cuisine explains Thai life: its tradition, custom and culture as well as confirms that Thai family is a big one in which its members live together with warm relationship. In cooking Thai food, family members have their share of helping, as a teamwork. Either the grown ups or the young ones, males or females, can participate. In some old families, the elders knew how to manage the young off springs giving their hands in cooking. Small kids could help with light works, e.g., nipping off miniature egg plants, or sweet basils from the stem; whereas the bigger ones could peel onions, garlics, pluck off vegetables, squeeze coconut meat, and pound chillies and spices, for example.

Accordingly, it is clearly seen that food cooking creates closeness among family members in talking and chatting to one another. Young kids knew how to help, and to cook as well as to be trained to have responsibility and discipline in working. The whole family, then, has a warm relationship and in turn produces worthy people for society in general.

Names:

Thai food always has its meaningful names which indicate its features or methods of cooking. Khanom Pui Fai is light, soft and yellowish white like cotton wool. Mi Krop (Crispy noodles) must be crispy. In the old days, most Thai people usually had a sense of humour and they often named foods, poetically, to stimulate the appetite. Among those foods are Jorka Lonson (Black bean in coconut milk), Naree Jaamseen (Banana in coconut milk) Ho Mujcha Chailai (Steamed curried fish), Paad Paakdong Fong Raga (Pickled vegetable fried with egg)

The Flavor of Thai food:
Regional Dishes :

The North: The food of the North has its light flavor, with a little spices, not very hot with chillies, not salty and without sugar, except in Phak Jo, Kaeng Kae, Kaeng Oom Moo, Sai Uaa, etc.

The North-East:The North-Eastern food has a strong flavor with chillies, salt, herbs and spices. Examples are Lap Pradook, Som Tom, Oomsab Tomsab, etc.

The Centre:The Central food has a moderate flavor with herbs and sugar. Kaeng Khieo Wan, Kaeng Som, Tom Yam, Tom Khaa Kai, Phanaeng, Choochee, are examples.

The South:The South has a very strong flavor of food with spicy herbs. Examples are fried or grilled tumeric-powdered fish, Kaeng Lyan, Tom Som, Pla Krabok and Kaeng Taipla.

83 Health Food Versus Junk Food In Today’s Society

Submitted By: Pascal E. Erdmann McDonalds Burger King Pizza Hut There are dozens of fast food chains in every part of the world, making it quite difficult for anyone to have a strict diet. Who would want a salad when they could easily have a large fry and an entire pizza? Unfortunately, the foods that taste the best are often the worst for your body. While we usually ignore this important fact, it is crucial that we at least try to consume nutritional food four days out of the week.

Since the health trend has spiked in most recent years, a myth has circulated across the globe. Most people feel that “nutritional food” – the types of products with an abundance of fiber, protein, and other vitamins, taste like the bottom of your toilet seat. Although many of these products do taste a bit bland, there are plenty that are delicious. It is just a matter of weeding out the disgusting foods and focusing on the ones that taste the best.

If you are trying your best to be healthy, it is essential to find foods that will treat your bodies well. Most grocery stores include products that have an “organic” symbol at the bottom of each box. This is great to look for, especially if you are searching for healthy alternatives. Once you have come across this symbol, you should try to find something high in fiber. For instance, Fiber One cereals or Kashi products are very high in the nutrients your body needs. Fortunately, they also taste amazing. Looking for something sweeter? Add a few berries to your cereal each morning.

Looking for wheat products is also key. Instead of buying Wonder bread, opt for whole grain or wheat. These types of products are much better for your bodies, and actually include the fiber that you should be getting. Not ready to give up all of the bagels and danishes? At least try buying the low fat wheat bagels, which barely taste any different. Add light cream cheese, and you are all set for a healthy breakfast.

Aside from organic foods and whole wheat bread, you should be taking nutritional supplements. While some people enjoy swallowing their daily vitamin, others like to be creative. Noni Juice is a popular favorite, as it is a natural fruit juice that does not have any extra preservatives. Looking for sweetness with all of the nutrients? Noni Juice is the perfect product, if that is what you are looking for. It not only boosts your immune system, but it gives you energy, and it fights off viruses that are trying to get you sick.

Health food is always going to somewhat have a negative connotation. After all, it never will be Pizza Hut or Burger King. However, these junk foods will by no means give you the nutrition that you desperately seek. By eating healthy foods and looking great, you will not only feel better about yourself, but you’ll have additional energy. It is a known fact that you will feel much different if you consume foods with fiber and nutrients. Once you start eating these types of groceries, chances are you’ll turn the other cheek to fast food chains.

82 Raw Food Health-Achieve Good Health Through Raw Food Starting Today

Submitted By: Josh Neumann Is raw food really good for your health? Many people want to know the answer to this question, as the raw food diet getting a lot of attention of the last several years.

Quite simply, the diet most people eat today does not lend itself to get long-term health. Many people eat a diet rich in meat and dairy products, and therefore don't achieve good health later in life.

The reason that raw food diet is so good for your health is that they contain enzymes, what your body needs to digest its’ food well. Quite simply, the only foods where enzymes are found is raw food because anytime you cook foods, the enzymes are cooked right out of it.

Only way to get enzymes is to eat your food raw and unooked; anytime you can cook food over a certain temperature, the enzymes are cooked out of it. This is why eating at a diet rich in raw food is so good for you.

Most raw food health advocates suggest you eat a diet with about 75% of your food being raw. Another great tip when eating raw food is to eat only raw food in the morning and at night. Quite simply, these times are the times that your body likes best to digest its food and cleanse its’ system.

When you put cooked food in your body, it has to spend that time trying to digest this food, and that’s why often times wake up more tired when you get up then when you went to bed; your body just spent the whole night digesting the cooked food, and had to work extremely hard to achieve this.

When you eat foods without enzymes the body has to manufacture its’ own digestive enzymes to aid in the digestion process because it’s not receiving it through it’s foods; when you get get it through your foods naturally, the body doesn’t have to work nearly as hard.

When you spend a lifetime eating cooked food, the pancreas wells up to at least twice its normal size. Hopefully these raw food health tips will help you get on the road to good health starting today. You are about to embark on an incredible adventure; good luck with your new raw food ways.

81 Travel to Holy Shrine of Buddha Amarnath in Jammu Kashmir

Submitted By: Archna Gupta It is also said that during one of his visits to the famous Amarnath ji cave in Kashmir, Lord Shiva had a brief sojourn at the place of present Buddha Amarnath ji temple at Mandi and started revealing to his consort Parvati the mortal secret story of eternal bliss and immortality. The story later got completed at Amarnath ji cave in Kashmir.

Thousands of devotees would throng the holy temple of Buddha Amarnath in border district of Poonch, situated close to the Line of Control. Chanting the holy mantras, the devotees from far off places come to pay their obeisance to Lord Shiva in this holy temple which is nestled in the sylvan picturesque surroundings of high mountains of Pir Panjal range which remains covered with snow most of the year.Situated twenty five kilometers northeast of Poonch town near Mandi, Buddha Amarnath Temple is an ancient Shiva temple located at the confluence of two gushing streams - the Nallah Gagri and the Pulstaya Nallah. Pulsatya Nallah is also known as Loran Nallah. These two streams make this place more enchanting and present a panorama to the eyes. What is unique about this Shiva Temple is that it is located on the foot hill and not on the hill top and has a Shivling of white stone which is not self made.

The locals believe that Ravan's grand father Pulasta Rishi performed his tapasya here and had a darshan of Lord Shiva. Thus, the Loran Nullah also derives its name from the name of Rishi Pulsatya. So both the places Amarnath in Kashmir Buddha Amarnath in jammu are considered to be equally holy and sacred by the devotees. Few people even say that the pilgrimage to Amarnath cave in Kashmir remains incomplete without a visit to this shrine.

At the temple, Lord Shiva manifests himself in the form of a “Chakmak” white rock unlike other Shiva temples where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a lingam.Besides this white Shivlingam, this beautiful temple has the ancient idols collected from nearby village. The original temple was built out of one big stone with four doors indicating that the doors are open for all the four varnas. The people of the area say that this shrine is older than of Amarnathji of Kashmir. Before partition, many people used to visit this shrine from areas now occupied by Pakistan. Even now, this shrine is visited by thousands of people on Raksha Bandhan and Shivratri. On the occasions of Raksha Bandhan, a big festival, known as Buddha Amarnath Ji Mela is held at the temple which is a major draw. Though the devotees in thousands visit the shrine on Shravan Poornima, heavy rush is witnessed throughout the year At Buddha Amarnath ji, the devotees take a dip in a spring which flows beneath the temple for purification and the have darshan as of immortal Lord Shiva and makes offerings. It is believed that Lord Shiva grants wishes to everyone who makes a pilgrimage to Buddha Amarnath.

Earlier there was four holy springs near the temple, at present the water of three springs has been diverted to fourth one, which is on the southern side of the temple. The pilgrims take bath in this holy spring before entering the temple.Road transport is readily available to and from Poonch. Buses, cars, jeeps carrying pilgrims ply on the road regularly. On Raksha Bandhan lots of people visited the shrine. Transport are available for Poonch district regularly which is 225 km from Jammu.

At Buddha Amarnath ji, the devotees take a dip in a spring which flows beneath the temple for purification and then have darshan as of immortal Lord Shiva and makes offerings. It is believed that Lord Shiva grants wishes to everyone who makes a pilgrimage to Buddha Amarnath.

80 Exquisite Hand-Carved Buddha Statues

Avendales is pleased to offer collectors and religious practitioners alike a line of exquisitely hand-carved Buddha statues. These Buddha statues are brought to you from village communities all over the countryside of Thailand. These statues are marketed in accordance with the principles and practices of Fair Trade, adding strict quality control and professional organization, using profits to help Thai artisans maintain their traditional skills.

Theravada Buddhism has been the predominant religion in Thailand since early recorded history. For over 2500 years the people of Thailand have followed the peaceful and self-reflective teachings of the Buddha, or "Dharma", which evolved directly out of the "dharma" of Hinduism, which in that context is "the way things work". These teachings inform all parts of the society within the kingdom, uniting the Thai people into a harmonious whole.

One fine choice is the Large Standing Japanese Buddha Statue. Standing five feet high and weighing 25 pounds, this statue embodies that time in the 6th century when Buddhism was imported to Japan from China and Korea in the form of a present from the friendly Korean kingdom of Kudara (Paikche).

At this time, although Buddhism was welcomed by the ruling nobles as Japan's new state religion, it did not initially spread among the common people due to its complex theories. During the Nara Period of the 8th century, the great Buddhist monasteries in the capital city of Nara, such as Todaiji, gained strong political influence. This problem of politically ambitious and militant monasteries remained a main issue for the governments over many centuries of Japanese history. The Large Standing Japanese Buddha Statue takes one back to those turbulent times.

Another exquisite offering of Buddha statues is the Sitting Royal Mandalay Buddha Statue. 20 inches tall and weighing 22 pounds, this statue is made in the classical Mandalay Buddha style. A broad band stretches across the forehead, and the hair hugs the head in tight curls and covers a broad prominent ushnish (a Sanskrit word referring to the protuberance at the top of the head of a Buddha Rupa representing the flame of supreme illumination). There is no lotus finial above.

The images are frequently seated in vajrasana (a Yoga posture designed to remove drowsiness, strengthen the spine, help digestion, and enhance meditation) with the right hand in the bhumisparsa mudra and the left lying in the lap. The uttarasanga (the upper robe of the Buddhist monastic garment, the "triple robe" or tricivara) is worn in the open mode and the sanghati (the outer robe of this garment) is folded decoratively on the left shoulder.

This "Mandalay" style of Buddhist statue developed towards the end of the eighteenth or in the early nineteenth century. Mandalay was the last capital (1860–1885) of the last independent Burmese Kingdom before annexation by the British after the Third Anglo-Burmese War in 1885.

In addition, one can choose a Sitting Thai Buddha Statue. 16 inches high and weighing nearly 20 pounds, this statue features the flame of Illumination rising up from the Buddha's seventh or Crown chakra at the top of the head. This statue embodies the Theravada Buddhism of Thailand.

One of the best pieces is the Large Standing Royal Ayuddhaya Buddha Statue. Five feet tall and weighing 25 pounds like the aforementioned standing Buddha statue, this work of art embodies the "illuminated royalty" of ancient Thailand. The inscription of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great (1292) mentions that a monk from the southern province of Nakorn Sri Dhammaraja — who had studied the Pali Buddhist Canon (or Tipitaka) from beginning to end — lived at the Forest Temple in the kingdom of Sukhothai and was the Supreme Patriarch (Pali sangharaja) of the monkhood. This statement is one of the earliest statements used by a king to legitimize his right to rule in accordance with Buddhist righteousness.

The "New Style" Large Reclining Mandalay Buddha Statue shows the divine one in much-deserved and sublime repose. Five feet tall and weighing 25 pounds, this statue embodies a Buddhist prophecy for Burma.

Unlike other Burmese towns, Mandalay did not grow from a smaller settlement, although a small village Hti Baunga did exist nearby. Mandalay was set up in an empty area at the foot of the 775 ft high Mandalay Hill according to a prophecy made by the Buddha that in that exact place a great city, a metropolis of Buddhism, would come into existence on the occasion of the 2400th jubilee of Buddhism. Allegedly this is precisely what happened.

These and other beautiful Buddhist statues are carried by Avendales for enhancing your home or office artistically, historically, or spiritually.

79 My Garden Buddha

My Garden Buddha
Submitted By: Santo Del Monico I decided to get rid of my gnomes and trolls and replace them with a garden Buddha. My gnomes are delightful and bring me great joy, but they are there to deter animals from snacking on my beautiful vegetables and plants. The animals seem to have missed the message I’ve been trying to send with my garden gnomes.

I went shopping online for my Buddha because Icouldn’t think of a local retail store that would sell a garden Buddha. I spend a lot of time in nurseries and in the gardening sections of big chain stores, so I have some authority on this.

I found exactly what I was looking for online, and with speedy shipping I had my garden Buddha set up in my garden four dayslater. While I initially bought him to scare away the squirrels and chipmunks and stray cats in the neighborhood who love to eat things like bulb flowers and herbs, I found that after a few days I really didn’t care if my garden Buddha did its job of protecting my garden. I didn’t care because I was in love with it,and the happiness I experienced every morning when I looked out at my garden and saw a pale gray Buddha sitting in the middle with the sun shining off his big round belly was reward enough for me.

After a couple of weeks I realized that my garden Buddha was not only not doing his job, but he was actually attracting the animals to his belly. More than once I found a neighborhood cat curled up against his bulging abdomen, fast asleep in the sun. I never would’ve thought a cat would be drawn to a stone Buddha figure. Maybe cats are more spiritual than I thought and maybe I underestimated their spirituality by assuming that the Buddha would have to be made out of pillows for them to be drawn to it. I guess the only logical thing to do is get my hands on some fox urine and sprinkle it around the perimeter of my garden to make it less attractive to the animals, because I’ve become so attached to the Buddha that I’ve decided he is there to stay.

78 The Buddha Antidote To Hype And Hustle Marketing

Are you as sick as I am of the marketing hype and hustle that comes from promoters of books, CDs, seminars and courses, to network marketing programs?

The Hype:

E.g. “I just finished reading a great book that you absolutely must have. It's called blah blah.”

Or

“'I've read every book on marketing printed in the last 150 years. This is the first breakthrough in over 50 years.'

“Kim, this business is going to EXPLODE! Get in early and with YOUR contacts, you can easily earn $300k your first year!"

"This new and amazing product is something EVERYONE will love!"

Then more hype titles from those selling YOU stuff so YOU can do the same thing to others:

"The Secret to Being a Great Closer"
"Mind Control Marketing"
"Hypnotic Marketing"

And now the hustle:

"Buy it in the next 90 minutes or the special disappears forever!" or "Get $3,000 worth of free bonuses when you buy this product for $29.95 now!" "Sign up now and we'll put 84 people under you today!"

My reaction to pitches like that?

1. Yeah right.

2. And so what if THEY think it’s great? Especially if I don’t know them. They’re selling it, aren’t they? What else would they say?

3. How can every new book, every new product, every new business opportunity every new ANYTHING be the “greatest” and “absolutely must have” and “life-changing?”

4. Why the frantic rush to close me on the first date?

First I thought maybe it's because I'm a woman. And as such, that I just don't like someone screaming at me how amazing their great thing is. You know, the one they're selling. And pressuring me to buy it right now or I might forever lose my chance at success.

But Mr. La feels hyped, too.

The NY Times reported the other day that at 2:30AM one day last week, Mr. La biked to a Target store to wait in line to get his new Xbox 360. And although as a game nut he felt good about owning it, after playing a shooting game on it for about 30 minutes, he concluded that the machine was not as much fun as he had hoped. “There was too much hype,” he said. (NY Times, 11.23.05)

How often have you been disappointed with stuff you bought or things you did because their hype got to you? They're good, these guys. Anything to make a sale.

There's nothing "best" and "must have" or "amazing" for everyone. And no amount of hype, no matter how loud and frequent, has ever changed that.

Maybe I'm just a groupie type. I like being with people like me. I'd rather find someone who actually uses and benefits from my stuff than someone who buys it and never use it, you know? I might sell to fewer people, but my customers write everyday to tell me of their new attitude or a little success here or there. Or a BIG success - like the the gal who got herself 3000 customers by learning to talk to people in a different way. That's just me.

I never dreamt or would presume that my stuff or approach is for everyone.

I market books and tapes showing new or dissatisfied people alternative ways to do direct sales and network marketing.

If you're successful with what you're doing, and your babies are too, then keep doing what you're doing. Don't buy my stuff.

But if you are not happy doing what you're doing in your NM business, and you believe in the business model like I do, then try other options before you quit, because there are ALWAYS other options. (Below's a new audio about a gal who got 3,000 customers in the last 2.5 years.)

For example, recruiting is NOT all there is to doing network marketing.

Notwithstanding the loud voices from corporate and "leaders" in the business, who stand the most to gain from that approach because there's more money in it for them than from you getting regular customers. So they usually belittle customer gathering and promote recruiting.

But many women don't like recruiting (they prefer getting customers) and the 102% drop out rate tells me all I need to know about how flawed that singular approach has been, especially these last 5 years. (The President of the DSA once told an audience the attrition rate was 102%!? How? Because, he explained, many people sign up for more than one company, and drop out of all of them.)

No amount of hype has changed the drop out stats.

What's the point, ladies? And yes, good gents.

Don’t succumb to the hype and hustle, even if you’re just starting and feel you don’t know what you’re doing in your new little business.

Try different ways of doing things. You CAN decide what works for you and what goes with your own gut, heart, style and personality. DO marketing strategies that appeal to you. Go ahead and try recruiting. See if there’s a match. If not, don’t hesitate to go after customers who are not also sales people. Forget about recruiting for a while. Try both warm and cold market - without hype of course.

Never go against your grain to please someone else for very long, if ever.
And yes, even if it's the teacher we're talking about.

The Buddha, one of the greatest teachers known in the history of the world, never hyped his teachings and beliefs to "get" others in or to see things his way. Religious scholar Huston Smith describes the time 2400 years ago...

“In a time when the multitudes were passively relying on [leaders] to tell them what to do Buddha challenged each individual to do his or her own religious seeking and rational investigation. 'Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing; nor upon tradition, nor upon rumor; nor upon what is in a book [scripture]; nor upon the consideration, ‘the monk is our teacher’. Rather, he said, test ideas and actions in your own laboratory of common sense. When you yourself know they lead to harm or ill, abandon them; when you yourself know they lead to benefit and happiness adopt them. Be lamps unto yourselves...” - Buddhism, a Concise Introduction. Huston Smith and Philip Novak, p. 24

So don't just fall for anyone's promises, especially if you know they have an agenda. Try different approaches. Then let your own experience with it be your guide. (Assuming you are doing the thing with honest effort and the best knowledge you have gotten about it.)

Fast forward about 2400 years...

On December 23, 2005, Steven Spielberg, arguably the greatest film director of all time, is releasing a new movie. This time, instead of launching it with the usual fanfare and hype that accompanies all big film openings...

“There will be no press junket, no premiere and, most importantly, no Oscar marketing campaign beyond trailers and posters for Steven Spielberg’s movie Munich, I have learned. This dicey decision to have no traditional publicity for the film before and after it opens December 23, 2005 is the director’s alone. He will not even be giving press or broadcast interviews. “The official strategy is for the movie to speak for itself,” an insider told me this week. “All they’re going to do is just show the movie to people...” Full story here.

Is there hope for less hype? Are you someone who wishes for that as fervently as I?

Here's how to help: Look at how you market your products or business. If the words used make promises, or heaven forbid, hype and hustle others, including in the autoresponders sent to others in your name, remember the Buddha. And ponder this from the bible of writing style for the last 100 years:

“When you overstate, readers will be instantly on guard, and everything that has preceded your overstatement as well as everything that follows will be suspect in their minds because they have lost confidence in your judgment or your poise.”

Whenever you are at the receiving end of any pressure to do things that are not really aligned with you, remember to check with the most important person in the world -

“Trust yourself and you will know how to live.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

What say you, ladies? And yes, my good gents?

P.S. I am launching a podcast (online audio-radio program) found at http://yourgreatthing.com

The show is designed to introduce entrepreneurs to different ways of doing network marketing and direct sales. "Talking about Your Great thing. How learning what to say changes everything." Reactions and suggested topics from you are MOST welcome. Email me: Kim@BananaMarketing.com

76 Fun Facts About Buddhism

In the various schools of Mahayana (the ‘greater vehicle’) Buddhism (which includes Tibetan Buddism, Chinese Ch’an and Japanese Zen, etc.) most of the Buddhas mentioned below are recognised. Theravada (or Hinayana, ‘the lesser vehicle’ ~ the Buddhism of Sri Lanka, Thailand and Burma) Buddhism just recognises Sakyamuni (and perhaps Maitreya and a few others) and so Amoghashiddi will be referred to as Sakyamuni (or Shakyamuni) with hands in Abhaya Mudra, etc., rather than Amoghashiddhi. Buddhism in Nepal has a tendency to mix and recognise both Buddhas and Hindu deities.

Who are the 5 Dhyani Buddhas?

The 5 Dhyani Buddhas are celestial Buddhas visualised during meditation, and considered to be great healers of the mind and soul. They are not historical figures, like Gautama (Sakyamuni) Buddha, but transcendent beings who symbolise universal divine principles or forces.

(1) Akshobhya

Akshobhya is regarded as the second Dhyani Buddha by the Nepalese Buddhists. He originates from the blue syllable HUM. He sits in the Vajraparyanka pose and his right hand is in the Bhumisparsha (earth-touching) Mudra, calling the earth for witness (Sakyamuni usually adopts the same pose). He represents the primordial cosmic element of Vijnana (consciousness). His left hand rests in his lap, while the right rests on his right knee with the tips of the middle fingers touching the ground with the palm facing inwards. His vehicle is a pair of elephants, and his symbol is the vajra (thunderbolt). His female counterpart is Locana.

(2) Amitabha Buddha (Jap. Amida)

Amitabha is the most ancient buddha among the Dhyani Buddhas. He is said to reside in the Sukhabati heaven in peaceful meditation. He is red, originating from the red syllable HRIH. He represents the cosmic element of Sanjna (name). His vehicle is a peacock. He sits in the full-lotus posture, right leg over left, with his palms folded face up, the right on top of the left, on his lap in Samadhi Mudra. His female counterpart is Pandara. Amitabha denotes ‘boundless light’ or the incomprehensible.

(3) Amoghashiddhi Buddha

Amoghashiddhi is the fifth Dhyani Buddha. He sits in the full-lotus posture, left leg over right, with his left hand open, palm facing upwards, on his lap, and the right in the Abhaya Mudra. He represents the cosmic element of Samskara (conformation). His colour is green and his symbol is the viswa vajra or double thunderbolt. He is the embodiment of the rainy season. His vehicle is Garuda.

(4) Ratna Sambhav Buddha

Ratna Sambhav is regarded as the third Dhyani Buddha. His symbol is the jewel and his hands are in the Varada (gift-bestowing) Mudra. He represents the cosmic element of Vedana (sensation). His colour is yellow. His female counterpart is Mamaki.

(5) Vairochana Buddha (Jap. Dainichi Nyorai)

Vairochana is regarded as the first Dhyani Buddha by the Nepalese Buddhists. He represents the cosmic element of Rupa (form). His colour is white, and his two hands are held against the chest with the tips of the thumbs and forefingers of each hand united, in the Dharmachakra (preaching) Mudra. His female counterpart is Vajradhatviswari.
OTHER BUDDHAS

What is Bhaisajya Buddha? (Jap. Yakushi Nyorai)

Bhaisajya (known as the medicine or healing Buddha) is said to dispense spiritual medicine when properly worshipped. He wears a monastic robe and is seated with legs crossed. His left hand, lying on his lap in the meditation mudra, usually holds a medicine bowl, while the right hand, in the charity mudra, holds either a branch with fruit, or the fruit alone, of myrobalam, a medicinal plant found in India.

What is Hotei? (also known as Budai, or The Laughing Buddha)

The Japanese name for the Chinese Zen Master Poe-Tai Hoshang (10th to 11th Century). Fat, grotesque and lovable, he symbolises the state of detached bliss which belongs to those who realise their Buddha Nature, or the Buddha within. He is loved the world over and worshipped by many as the God of Good Fortune (he is also regarded by some as a form of Maitreya).

What is Sakyamuni Buddha?

Gautama Buddha is believed to have had 550 incarnations. To distinguish him from all other Buddhas, he is known as Sakyamuni (sage of the Sakya Clan). He was born in 563 BC in Lumbini, Nepal, the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Mayadevi. He attained enlightenment after 6 years of meditation and fasting. He died aged 80 in Kushinagara. Usually shown seated in padmasana (lotus posture) with right hand in Bhumisparsha (earth-touching) Mudra. Sometimes shown standing with right hand in Abhaya (protecting) Mudra.

75 The Fascinating Facts About Olive Oil

The Fascinating Facts About Olive Oil
by: Anne Costigan

The production and manufacture of olive oil is graded by different processes which result in different levels of acidity.

There are well over 260 varieties of olive trees that bear fruit.

Among the most favorite variety are:

Arbequina
Cornicabra
Empeltre
Hojiblanco
Manzanilla
Picual

Several extra virgin olive oil brands contain a blend of several of these olive varieties. Some oils are of one-fruit extraction – solely. A quality olive oil will be stored in dark glass bottles. This helps to prevent oxidization which helps to prevent the loss of its valuable nutritional quality.

• Cold-pressed olive oil is the supreme of olive oils. This is the best way to have both chemical-free and low acid oil.

• Extra Virgin olive oil (EVOO) is cold pressed with a 1% of oleic acidity. This golden-green oil has the most flavor and aroma.

• Virgin olive oil is cold pressed.

• Olive oil, with an acidity between 1 to 3 %, are a combination of refined, virgin and extra virgin oils.

Light olive oil goes through a fine-filtration process. It is so called light because it is mixed mostly with canola oil. It maintains the same amount of calories as the other olive oils. Light olive oil is best used for deep-frying and mayonnaise production.

Virgin and Extra virgin olive oil are more suited to a low heat cooking. These oils make excellent salad dressings and roasts.

Caution is needed if you plan to deep fry with it. Cooking with olive oil requires specific attention. The oil is highly combustible at high temperatures and therefore loses its nutritional value. It will smoke quickly. It is suggested that a slice of stale bread will prevent it from burning. The bread will also help to keep the bitterness of the oil down.

It is easy to infuse this oil with different herbs and spices. This brings about a unique flavor. The infusion of the oil with herbs and spices were first done during the Olympic games.

Olive trees have millions of references. The first recorded history is in the book of Genesis in the Bible when the dove was release by Noah during the great flood and brought back and olive branch, signifying that there was dry land and God had delivered hope and forgiveness to mankind.

The Great Seal of America sports an olive branch. “The olive branch and the arrows signify the power of peace and war which is exclusively vested in Congress.” Charles Thomson. Equally significant are the two olive branches that enwreathe the United Nations emblem.

The beautiful Mediterranean olive groves inspired famous artists Cezanne, Matisse, Renoir and Vincent van Gogh. Jesus Christ was on the Mount of Olives when he was both arrested and later when he rose in his resurrection. These magnificent trees grow in Spain and add to the beautiful countryside and culture.

Olive oil has been burned through the centuries as our light and has been a wonderful source of food. To this very day olive oil is considered precious oil and is used by millions as a nutritional food source.

74 Organic Gourmet Coffee is Prized For Being the Best of the Best

Gourmet coffees are just like gourmet meals – top of the line in every way, using only the finest ingredients and best methods to create a finished product that is wonderful in every way. Gourmet coffee comes in a number of varieties and each uses only the very best quality coffee beans for roasting.

Organic gourmet coffee is a special coffee treat because not only is it gourmet, meaning that you can expect rich, smooth, flavorful and full-bodied coffee, but it’s organic, meaning that you can expect that the coffee has been grown with the best, most environmental and people-friendly practices. The rarest coffees that are highly sought after as gourmet coffees can all be grown organically, and if you look, you can find excellent organic gourmet coffee varieties.

The best way to purchase any gourmet coffee and of course organic gourmet coffee is fresh from the roaster. This isn’t really possible from your local supermarket although your favorite store probably offers organic gourmet coffee - both whole bean and ground. Often, it’s best to order fresh organic gourmet coffee straight from a specialty business that roasts specialty coffees fresh daily. You can do this online, or from specialty catalogs.

The key to getting organic gourmet coffee is getting it freshly roasted. The fresher it is, the better the flavor and overall quality will be. The fact that you are getting gourmet coffee made from organically grown coffee beans means that your gourmet coffee is going to the very best you can possibly get – the best of the best!

The Best Flavored Organic Coffee Uses the Best Ingredients

Determining which organic coffee is the best-flavored organic coffee could prove to be rather difficult. After all, isn't it simply a matter of taste? Even though your opinion might differ from that of a fellow coffee lover, there are still some things that you will find that all of the best-flavored organic coffees have in common.

First, really good flavored coffee, organic or otherwise will have 100% natural flavorings. The use of natural flavors gives the organic coffee delicate hints of the fruit, nut or other extracts that are used. Medium roasted organic coffee beans seem to lend themselves better to accepting flavorings and tend to make the added flavors come alive on your taste buds better.

Common flavorings used to add different tastes to your organic coffee can include hazelnut, chocolate, vanilla, Irish cream and Macadamia nut. Almond, amaretto, coconut, cinnamon and peppermint are among other common flavors added to coffee. Sometimes you will find these in exotic combination's with yet other flavors.

Rich organic coffee is sometimes considered best when it is accented by a hint of something else – maybe a bit of hazelnut with a whisper of chocolate or a dash of almond and coconut to lend a South Seas taste.

No matter what your personal preference of flavorings, the best-flavored organic coffee is one that uses the finest organic coffee beans combined with the best natural flavorings. The combination will surprise and delight you with every sip!

73 Organic Green Coffee Beans For Home Roasters

For those who like to experiment with roasting their own coffee, organic green coffee beans provide a much better outcome and taste than non-organic green coffee beans. The reason is this that organic coffee simply tastes better because it’s grown without synthetic chemicals and fertilizers and also because it is grown in the conditions that coffee was meant to grow in.

Coffee likes to grow in shady spots with rich soil. Normally, coffee grows fairly slowly. When coffee is allowed to grow the way it naturally likes to, it has more time to take up nutrients from the soil and form coffee beans that are naturally of higher quality.

Organic farmers grow coffee in this way, so organic green coffee beans are of a much better quality from the start. Non-organic coffee growers grow coffee on farms that do not offer shade (they use substandard varieties that will tolerate sun), and force the coffee plants to grow much more quickly with the use of harsh synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. This illustrates why organic green coffee is better from the start.

If you enjoy creating your own coffee from beans that you’ve carefully and skillfully roasted yourself, try roasting organic green coffee beans for a coffee that is smoother, richer and more full of flavor. You’ll love the change, and you’ll love knowing that the coffee you’re roasting and drinking is organic – healthier for you and healthier for the planet.

Why Drink Organic Fair Trade Coffee?

You probably already know why it’s best to drink organic coffee. The growing process is much better for the Earth, for you and for all the people and creatures we share the planet with. Organically grown coffee is also more flavorful and rich. But what about organic Fair Trade coffee? Should you drink it, and if so, why?

Fair trade coffee comes from all over the world, mostly from small farms in developing countries. The Fair Trade certification tells you that the farmer that grew the coffee received a fair price for it, and that the farmer’s community and surrounding environment also benefit from Fair Trade as well.

Coffee that is certified to be Fair Trade helps farmers in developing countries market their harvests and develop long-term and equitable contracts with international buyers. Getting a fair price for their coffee enables them to invest in their family’s and community’s health care and educational system, and to become good stewards of the environment, furthering healthy growth and stability.

Fair Trade and organic go hand in hand because environmental stewardship is one of the cornerstones of each. When you purchase organic Fair Trade coffee, you are not only helping the farmer and the community he or she lives in, you are doing your part to support healthier ecosystems and the global environment as well. Organic Fair Trade coffee tastes better, and it also makes you feel better because you’re helping a host of people to live better and healthier lives.

And those are just few of the reasons you should choose organic coffee beans.

You may call this Universal Source by any name you wish, God, Brahman, Allah, Christ Consciousness, Buddha Nature etc, Yoga is a pathway to bring you to the realization that you and this Universal Source are inseparably One.

There are many branches of Yoga, such as Bhakti Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Laya Yoga, Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Kundalini Yoga to name a few. These all have the same one goal, unification with the Universal Source, but each follow a different path to get there. Depending on your personality one or the other path may suit you better.

Here is a description of some of the major branches of Yoga:

* Bhakti Yoga: Emphasizes love as the pathway to liberation and Union.

* Jnana Yoga: Emphasizes the intellectual and philosophical approach to penetrate the illusion of dualistic reality.

* Karma Yoga: Emphasizes right action and selfless service as the path to moksha (liberation).

* Kundalini Yoga: Emphasizes the activation of Kundalini Shakti for enlightenment.

* Raja Yoga: Considered the Scientific approach, this branch emphasizes Sage Patanjali's 8 step path to Self-Realization.

In this article I will expand on Raja Yoga as that is perhaps the most prevalent and popular Yoga system in use today.

As indicated above Raja Yoga employs Sage Patanjali's 8 step path to achieve Union with the Supreme. This 8 step system (ashtanga) compromises of the following parts. Yamas, Niyamas, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and finally Samadhi. This 8 step path is designed to bring about physical, emotion and mental harmony; and in the advanced practices of Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi lead to the cessation of thoughts allowing the mind to realize that Reality is indeed Singular, Whole and indivisible.

Here is a description of the 8 limbs of Raja Yoga:

1. Yamas: Yamas are abstensions. They are truth, nonviolence, control of sexual energy, nonstealing and noncovetousness.

2. Niyams: Niyams are observances. They are austerities, purity, contentment, study and egolessness.

3. Asanas: Steady postures and poses.

4. Pranayama: Breathing exercises and control of the vital energy.

5. Pratyahara: Withdrawal of the Senses.

6. Dharana: Concentration of the mind.

7. Dhyana: Meditation.

8. Samadhi: Union with the Supreme Consciousness.

The regular practice of Raja Yoga promotes health, happiness and insight. Although the ultimate goal of Yoga is Union with the Supreme, many material benefits are also obtained by its practice.

Today, many ailments are treated via the use of Yoga asanas and pranayamas, and the stress reducing benefits of Yoga meditation are becoming more and more valuable to us given our hectic and frantic lifestyles. Furthermore, the principles of humility, truth and other high values that Yoga promotes are helping to offset some of the excessive materialism and greed that is eroding the peace and spirit of our society today.

The most important aspect of Yoga is that it is based on Self-Realization. In other words, you are given the tools required, and using them you bring about the necessary transformations in yourself to reach your true potential in life.

It is now often said, that the next great teachers will arise from the West. This is because the West has an empirical approach to things, as opposed to superstition and blind faith. If something works it is embraced and utilized, if something does not prove to work, it is discarded as junk. This is probably the reason why Yoga has grown in such popularity here in the West, because it works. So dive in and reap the benefits.

70 Diamonds, Gemstones, Lumps of Coal - Another Strike at the Dragon's Soul

Wednesday, 2 April 2008 - Derek Dashwood
This news to China is another diamond of the moral lessons from God or pure living, or Buddha himself. The way we live, is the way we die. Buddha had a following not because what he said, but how he lived such a holy serene life as no other holy man of his time. And while this diamond of a gentle man lived a simple life, and like Socrates in the west, merely answer questions with a question, and go inside his bliss.

Which what another diamond of a human being has just done, and informed the world, and his host China, he may miss th parade. For he fears for his health if in his race he proceeds, for he is long distance runner, for which lung power much needs. Of all of the athletes, the long race will be won, by he who runs fastest, and sucks air through his lungs.

However, in Beijing, each visit, he fears for his life. For the air is so filthy many have masks on their faces as day seems like twilight. And for this champion to win, he must train there with might, to know the terrain, every up and down site. And by the time of the races, and parades and speeches now complete; he is not sure if he would have lungs left to stand on his feet.

So on Olympics and torches like the Disney Parade, with lights and sights to marvel, all through each day. Are we to use candles, or masks and a lamp, to watch each runner still standing cough over that ramp? When the best mice from heaven start leaving the boat, it is time for a make over, or swamp in the moat. The Forbidden Palace is bloated, and very confused. How to get rich, be Communist, not confused by the rules.

Poor Communist China, on it's way to get rich, still keeps controls like a female with puppies, our snarling great bitch. Take Tibet, and Sudan for oil. Tibetans who make trouble could be shipped to Darfur, in exchange for that oil. Gone Tibetan, such trouble, now peopled with Hans. Hans is also Chinese, as German, but who could so tell? 1939 soldiers named Hans in helmets marched from Paris to Moscow. Times change, people earn to love and forgive. French now hug Germans: how grown up is that?

Except up in Tibet. Here, the 2008 Hans are more golden and they come from the coast. And they take over Tibet, each Han soldier can boast. Bump baton upon skull of Tibetan in robes. Only way to teach them, our great culture here in droves.

Meanwhile, back in Beijing, they wonder if they were to close down the coal burning factories around Beijing as long as guests were in town. It could be as in America in that horrible three days after 9/11 when all air traffic was shut down. The skies of America became blue. Not every other coal burning factory and all our exhaust SUV could make the sky gray. We may not have noticed, but science sure did. Meanwhile a billion Chinese want to fly to Rome for the fall.

And that kerosine driven airplane creates a fake heavenly sky as it leaves a jet trail wover a clear blue sky. That serene implication of that white cloud is a lie. It is kerosine spittle, that when it rains, falls on you and I. So I think science would agree with this stink: we might be more health by far, if they left the toilets open to fall. At least good for the gardens, we can handle crap as we get it at work. But if they could find a way to put a diaper on the rear of that jet engine air bus, they could stop it from wet potties, of kerosine onto us.

Take the new jet super trains that, like veins through our bodies, encircle the earth. Get the coal dust technology information to all. And until jets can get off kerosine, take the clean train, and marvel at the Great Wall of China, under blue skies, on your way to Rome. So fascinating, as with the French jet on rails, keep your eye on the castle in the distance.

For if you look down, you are soon sick and dizzy. You are flying. At ground level. Those whizzing bushes by the track give you more information than you need, for an enjoyable quick tram trip from London to Delhi, and then on to Seattle and New York. But if you do happen to walk outside in the air, wash your hair, take care, the airplanes have been out there. Not a diamond among them, flying kerosine lumps of coal, being rude on us down there.

Raindrops of kerosine are falling on my head, but I'm not dead, so what do I care? Nobodies there, so keep on rolling through the sky, until we all die, those coal burning lamps are coming back, Jack, you go with the flow, what do you know, it's a blazing good show, the hotter it gets the less that you know. And us red ants seek black ants where ever they go. Unforgiving Gods or Allahs brought to us in anger and hate. If only, if only, or is hope way too late? No. God is not finished with one life human yet.

Until we can be wise like Buddha, whose wise followers were surely those three, who allowed God to allow them to be a the birth of Christ Jesus. Buddha's last day among life, was in his mid eighties, for those days a great age. He and his loved ones all enjoyed a simple meal, they meditated together until Buddha was gone. His meditation took him to Heaven, Nirvana, as they say. In bliss and harmony, golden rules in full play.

69 Healthy Lifestyles, Happiness Amidst Chaos Requires Concentration

Monday, 17 March 2008 - Derek Dashwood
In Richmond on the west coast of Canada, a news story told the feelings of several older locals who recalled how 50 years ago all their young Japanese playmates were pulled out of school and sent off forever in army trucks, and they still felt sadness and some guilt somehow.

Now the Japanese are long gone, only seen in curio shops of artifacts from Japan. Now, more likely are peoples from China, with their curio shops. You can now buy a Buddha as known in Japan, or in China, both very different from the true thin real Buddha who died quietly in his eighties while meditating under a fig tree in India.

Buddha had a pleasant morning with his disciples and they all followed great Gautama Buddha in which he began a final serene meditation in this world and completed it in the next.

Perfection leaving clay and entering Nirvana we could all pray to attain near our ascent, or descent to eternity. And these neighbors all notice how their children come from home having studied those two religions next doors and how much they sound like ours.

Then, we know, we need to be aware that we truly can begin our ascent to wisdom not with a bomb in a mall but with flower shops and organic food stalls and books about deep thoughts and fun mysteries that cause you to think what if?

None argue such a detail as that when they meet under the fig trees in the mall, where their children laugh and play, as they do at school. As our worlds and histories seem to dictate, new migrants to America are more Latino, in Canada from old British Asia.

Now more than half the population of Richmond were born outside Canada, of the 173,600 residents, 57 percent were foreign born. And the racial harmony has been remarkable in this city with the highest proportion of foreign born people in Canada.

How this could happen is the happy harmony out of decades of guilt, misplaced into Anglo youth who saw their Japanese friends taken away in trucks after Pearl Harbor. To many elderly Anglo people in Richmond now, it is an almost eventual accepting of each new wave of ethnics mixing with the English speaking local people of Canada.

Locals can recall losing playmates whose parents were from Japan but who had been born here; feeling hurt and anger as they saw them being trucked away, their homes and fishing boats sold at auctions. This happened in Canada in tandem with America as panic felt in all American and Canadian Pacific coastal cities after Pearl Harbor.

Few citizens of Canada or America who were originally from Japan returned to their previous homes after the war. The new waves began in earnest before the takeover of Hong Kong when many Chinese arrived, and this has continued from China and southeast Asia.

Each new wave has tried to fit in with the existing society; even in rare cases where several shops in several malls placed only Chinese or other ethnic ads in their windows, causing excitement at city hall. No bylaw was necessary, after delegations reminded the merchants they were turning away potential customers.

"25-50 PERCENT OFF" signs in English and Hindu and Vietnam were soon sprouting throughout the malls and neighbor merchants-strangers, began to bow and meet and buy each from each other. Their children began to feel comfortable in the strange other shops and play with those children. The signs are now all clearly in Chinese, Hindi, whatever plus English.

This uplifting story of peoples of various ethnic backgrounds learning to live with each other and their strange smells, habits, customs, sounds, religious peculiarities-such as our Christmas- should be encouraging to all persons of good will. It does for me.

68 A Delightful Vacation to Shanghai

Saturday, 15 March 2008 - Wolfgang Jaegel
Shanghai is a bustling metropolis, situated on the southern banks of the Yangtze River's mouth, along the coast of the East China Sea. Occupying an area of about 2445 square miles, Shanghai holds the distinction of being the largest metropolis in the country.

This historically significant city was once a place simply consisting of rice fields and mud huts and flats. But, the city has now become one of the world's most vibrant destinations, boasting of modern skyscrapers, chains of shops, and world class international restaurants and cafes.

In other words, Shanghai is a prosperous international city, with highly sophisticated infrastructure and leading establishments in the arenas of commerce, finance, and industry. When comes to attractions, the city presents as a rich as well as diverse range of landmarks, all of which are a blend modern and traditional. In fact, Shanghai now excels both as a business center and a tourist spot. Below mentioned in this article are some of the not to miss attractions in the city.

Jade Buddha Temple: Built in 1928 in the site of an old temple erected in 1882, this temple is one of the most revered shrines in Shanghai. The centerpiece of the temple is two jade statues of Lord Buddha, of which one is in sitting posture and another in the recumbent posture. The sitting Buddha is about 200 centimeters high and depicts Lord Buddha at the time of his meditation as well as enlightenment.

In the case of the Recumbent Buddha, it is about 95 centimeters long, with right hand supporting the head and the left hand being placed on the left leg. This posture sometimes acknowledged as the lucky repose. These images are thought to have been brought from Burma by a monk, Huigen. Apart from these, the temple boasts of more than 7000 Dazang sutras. In short, the temple is truly a treasure trove of cultural relics.

Longhua Park: Situated at the south of the city is Longhua Park, which is much famed for its Longhua Temple and Longhua Pagoda. Built in 242 AD, the Longhua Temple is the oldest of its kind in the city, with a history of more than 1500 years. Sprawling over an area of about five acres, this is also the largest temple in the area. One of the specialties of the temple is a two-meter high copper bell, which is placed within a three-storied bell tower. Adjacent to the temple is high Longhua Pagoda, with seven stories. Al though the pagoda has been renovated several times, the architectural style of the Song Dynasty is still retained.

Qibao Ancient Town: A visit to this spot would be a great experience for those who want to take a peep into the history of the region. With a history of more than 1000 years, Qibao was built during the reign of the Song Dynasty. Later, during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it became a flourishing business center. Among the highlights of this spot are the Qibao Temple, which is noted for its great appearance; Qibao crickets, which was once a main folk activity among the Chinese, and now a museum has been set up to display live cricket fighting shows.

Qibao Shadow Play, which is based on the historical events of the region; and Qibao snacks, which include colorful as well as appetizing snacks such as dried bean curd served in lotus leaves, roasted sweet potatoes, sugar coated haws, and smoked toads.

Shanghai Museum: Located in the heart of the city in People's Square, Shanghai Museum has on display arts and artifacts of ancient China, all of which are spread across eleven art galleries and three exhibition halls. Among the exhibits are bronze and ceramic items, paintings, calligraphy, sculpture and furniture, jade, seals, and coins.

Yuyuan Garden: This much famed classical garden is perhaps the greatest of all attractions in the region. Built in 1577 by Pan Yunduan - a government official of the Ming Dynasty - for his aged parents, Yuyuan Garden is a tranquil spot, with such areas as Sansui Hall, Dianchun Hall, Wanhua Chamber, Yuhua Hall, Inner Garden, and Huijing Hall. Apart from these, several pavilions, ponds, cloisters, and rockeries can also be seen here.

Above mentioned are just few among many of the umpteen attractions in Shanghai. Points of interest also include the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, which is the third tallest TV and radio tower in the world and the Former Residence of Sun Yat-Sen - a European style building where Mr Sun Yat-Sen and his lived Mrs. Soong Ching Ling lived here from 1918 to 1925.

With these scores of attractions, it is not a wonder why Shanghai is visited year-round from people across the globe. Shanghai boasts of a good number of accommodation choices in the form of upscale hotels, which provides guests to choose from a number of options, such as standard room, deluxe room, and well-designed suites. Each of these options is replete with modern amenities and facilities.

67 Diamonds That Sparkle - In Her Eyes, With You

Tuesday, 1 April 2008 - Derek Dashwood
The most ancient precious item out of creation, beyond even gold, was a diamond. A princess resplendent in her riches of gemstones and gold, would have a centerpiece that held a diamond to behold. All would gaze in awe, as this diamond of a person glided by, diamonds in her eyes, and splendor all around. And then there those human diamonds, in the east in China was Confucous, who taught of good behavior and obedience to the state, and he did not believe in an after life.

Then came Guatama Buddha (560-480 B.C.E.). Buddha was born as a prince, in a palace of diamonds. But at age 29 Prince Guatama left that behind to find in a simpler way to live, and to find peace somehow within. At that time the ancient religion of Hindhu beliefs held many fables and stories, in that the world was balanced on the back of a giant turtle, or gods with many arms. This also had a caste system that is hard for India to shake, and it had become a central part of the religion. At the top were the usually lightest skinned rulers and those of the court, who were closest to God.

Many religions still follow this 5,000 year old Brahmin superiority over other faiths. Buddha was actually in the second highest caste system, those of the warriors, who had to be that high, like modern civil servants but more as protection on their way to Nirvana first. Down it went until the darkest skin people were the real life and spiritual untouchables, and were perhaps going to have to undergo many transformations. And until that, their children were doomed as they to be the latrine duty for life.

Buddha rejected all this. His quiet, diamond eyes found eight steps to bliss, painful discovery at a time. By the time of his gentle death at age eighty, a very old age for that time, he began with a simple meal with his family of friends, and they all began a final meditation as one in this life. At the end of the meditation, which my caste allows twenty minutes as perfection, gentle Buddha had followed his meditation into Nirvana so blissfully. A diamond of a life.

It was his three disciples, surely, that were wise and from the east, there to look into the eyes of baby Jesus. The next son of God would surely have eyes that glittered like diamonds, then they knew. And this search is how Buddhists, up in Tibet, as the ruling holy man is frail and dying, begin to prepare for their search. In the time after the death of their dear leader, they follow the trails of Tibet, and look into the eyes of each new born child. At times, it has taken them years, and when that baby is found, all holy men must agree.

When they look into those eyes, the diamonds are there, then all praise their leader, and nurture him for life. And I think of the diamonds in the eyes of the mostly kindly at church, or in a shopping line, or in life. Researchers at the University of California have showed that there are eight general virtues of those who report most bliss and happiness in their lives, live the longest, report best health for age, gender, and income group. These sound an awful lot of church going people who do charity work that I have known.

Such diamonds, I thought and still do, were those diamonds sparkling all around America that GHW Bush, the senior, to talk about, little halos of light. And I knew it was his compassionate conservatism saying we may have some budget cuts to the needy, as we get people less dependent on government. So come on, you diamonds and sparkles of light, pitch in. If you want government off your backs, then more volunteering will be needed. And he was mocked in cartoons as a sparkling airhead, which he is not. That empty hat belong to his son, we mostly agree.

But diamonds for her, from you, make her sparkle, eyes, through and through. So as you do your good deeds, heed these words of diamonds with soft, not hard, souls. These eight virtues to Nirvana are here, science proves Buddha. Count your blessings. Do acts of kindness daily. Savor the joys of life. Learn to forgive. I find this most effective by going first. I approached an old enemy from decades ago. He twitched as if here we go again. I said that whatever happened I could not go to my grave feeling badly. I asked for his forgiveness. You might try it and see what happens. I had a blabbing man shaking my hand, saying no it was really his fault.

Now when we pass, windows go down, friendly hand wave, both sets of eyes sparkle like diamonds. Stay close to your friends and family. Take care of your body. Science says we begin to lose life when we are no longer able when we are unable to get off the toilet without help. Our muscle mass and we, begin our gradual route to heaven with diamonds in our eyes and souls, or to hell with our Tibet Han policeman eyes of coal.

Swing that baton, wield that gun, people who only knew to love are so easy to shove. Those diamond eyes of monks wince, it is true, when hit by a billy club. Would not you? After his roaming and meditations, Buddha came to conclude, it was most wise to ask little, give much, be holy. All his followers understood. And then, when his meditation was over, the others made a shrine, which I have seen, of where he had last been. If all we do is that in life, it will be a place they plant flowers forever. With a diamond below.

66 Diamond Minds, Science, Logic - The Promised Land Is Still West

Wednesday, 9 April 2008 - Derek Dashwood
I am watching an international panel of famous thinkers on the British channel, truly diamond minds. One of the comments of Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame was that leaders self destruct by their own folly: Nixon erasing tapes of a petty theft, Bush junior rashly creating an unneeded inferno that has diminished America. And this had been mentioned on the earlier program that showed people having brain scans while they were shown pictures of them or others in self indulgence, anger, sadness, and joyfully sharing a smile as they help someone. And we now know that the most potent section of the brain right up front between and above our eyes lights glowingly hot.

The prehistoric anger portions are more deeply embedded, which brings my thoughts to those red ants and black ants who only have the prehistoric back portion of the brain. This is my thought, but if any of our grand daughters carry this concept through to a science degree, we might see this even further. We have not distinguished that prehistoric fight or flee of the red ants, which was observed by Thoreau. As he had inadvertently built his house of wattles at Walden Pond on paths long worn, well apart, by red ants and black ants, who would work away all day carrying their leaves back to HQ all day long.

Except now they had to divert around the house of wattles which brought them into contact with each other. And like the Arab and the Jew, did they tip their caps, say excuse me, how dew you do,and get on their way, as was in God's will, to deliver the leaf? No, they did not: leafs off, pincers at throats until a red or black head was separated from it's body, until there was hardly an ant alive. And at this time, soldiers of Thoreau's sacred new Jerusalem, America, had arrived in Mexico City, and Thoreau went to jail rather than pay taxes to support the war.

And when you think of it, there was not one Thoreau in that vast battleground of red and black ants and the carnage of blood and death. Not one who could care or think enough to see this is madness and cry stop. They had no frontal lobes to light up and cause inner joy by a kind act, which could have overwhelmed their primitive anger, as with people in a state of rage. We have mentioned before, that the eight paths of Buddha have been shown to overlap with what science knows are the eight steps to bliss. And that around 320 B.C.E. Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.E.) frightened his soldiers, and while his men built the mightiest city in the world at Alexandria to be the great export port of tropical foods from Egypt to Greece, Alexander went alone into the west in search of a holy man who spoke of one God. He found him, peacefully meditating at an oasis as if from Eden, in the sand dunes.

Who was this holy man in 320 B.C.E alone in a true garden of Eden? This could be so naturally, perfectly possible to expand and create today. This follower of serene Buddha, surely, he had found a promised land that had no other people. It was a oasis sufficient with water and fig, date trees, all he did need. It was a land of milk and honey indeed. It only need more water for a loving land for a people.

Alexander had been taught by Aristotle, who had been taught by Socrates (469-399 B.C.E.) as he died, that if one lived a good life and did not harm others, he felt as the hemlock took over his life that he was going to a better place and would not find there those who had condemned him to die for seeing too well and speaking his honest thoughts.

Alexander well knew that upon the death of good Socrates (469-399 B.C.E) the citizens of Athens turned on the Ruling 30. Soon, all were dead, disgraced, or banished from Athens. And history shows that followers of Guatama Buddha (560-480 B.C.E.)had reached Egypt to Greece by the time of the death of Buddha by this time: look at the birth and death dates of each. Athens came into it's greatest bloom within decades of the death of great Buddha, who had sent forward messengers of love and peace.

Imagine how that affects this miracles of democracy, which was surely Buddha and his followers in a group meditation. That man that Alexander risked his life seemed far more wise than the many feuding tribes north of the Sinai. Jews escaping slavery in Egypt, had ten commandments, 40 years to wander the Sinai desert, and then move north into lands occupied by others and say it is now ours. Black hatted ants say God said we are more holy, chosen, if you like, so go away, or we will put you behind walls.

Oh dear God or Allah. Who is going to get the sand out of eyes, and look at a map, for once, not just damning Commandments. Buddha's lead to bliss, not the strap. |Anyway, if wise diamond minds rather than the coal of today would redirect the Nile so it's fresh water is not wasted into the sea at Alexandria. This is the same as with the Colorado River, all used by people and not quite a drop it wasted into the sea. Deserts that allow fresh water into the sea should lift their thinking from common poor coal to rich brilliant diamonds.

Let us redirect that final fresh water Nile. Send it west to create new lush gardens of Edens for Egypt over to a wide crescent around the vast Quattara Depression in uninhabited west Egypt. Science says it would take one hundred years to fill, and imagine the Palm Beach tropical new Jewish sensible community. One more negotiation, Egypt and new Isreal would be inside the new Europe, and as in England one thousand five hundred years later, all trade at the Dane Line, in peace.

That prophet and Alexander knew those eight virtues to bliss are count your blessings, do acts of kindness daily, savor life's joys, thank a mentor, learn to forgive.I find this works best by going to an old enemy, watch him twitch, oh no, not again. And I ask for his forgiveness, I could not go to my grave feeling that, whatever, I had acted badly. And when you try this, as I now have, you may find a blabbing person shaking your hand and saying, no, it was really his fault. Now when we pass, windows go down, big waves, our eyes sparkle like diamonds.

Stay close to friends and family. Take care of your body. Develop strategies to cope with hardship. And that serene harmony is waiting for the black ant Jew.

Sam, your wiser promised land was to the west, not into the red ants nest to the east, through the Red Sea into a hopeless triangle of desert. Now we can see, if only God had given a map, the Ten Commandments do not bring bliss, the eight ways of Buddha and science do. Surely funds would pour into this and Palestinians that were once Essenes perhaps thousands of years ago, can till their own land. But I was born a Christian and am now much more with Buddha; we wouldn't feel welcome there either, let along arrogate to ourselves a wall. Why should you?

Sam, you read the map all wrong. Oh, right, you didn't have a map. But we can all see that you, like Thoreau, built your house of wattles on the wrong ant's nest. Buddha, God says we are all God's chosen people, right? No Hindu Brahmin or other faiths more Chosen? I thought so.

People can only attain these blissful states, the studies added, in a peaceful, mutually forgiving neighborhood where your kids can ride their bikes, all the way around Lake Quattara, some day before Armaggadon, which Buddha and I do not accept.

Why not be loving, forgiving; back off when we are stepping on another ant's toes before his back brain overpowers all. In the name of God, Buddha, science, diamond minds of sanity, and me. Wall, are you listening? Sigh. No bliss in this as we follow the course.

65 Food and a Healthy Diet

Tuesday, 22 July 2008 - Malcolm Blake
Each living thing has its food, without which it dies. This food may vary within certain limits; beyond them disease sets in, even if life continues.

Every child who has kept chickens or rabbits knows how carefully and regularly they need to be fed. Every child who has grown house plants or cultivated a garden plot knows how necessary air, water, and soil are for their life and growth.

It is only needful to transfer this knowledge to ourselves to see that we, as living beings, need our food in the same way ; and that air and water, as well as meat and milk, sugar and eggs, are our foods, without which we cannot live.

The baby's food is milk, which contains all the substances needed except oxygen of the air. This must be breathed in through the lungs. To milk is added for the child of two years starch in various forms, rice, potatoes,, wheat bread, corn mush, etc. For the six years old there are added a few fruits and vegetables, eggs and a very little meat.

Animals, man included, are made up of millions of small cells, which do their work in a like manner. They live upon the ready prepared substances which the blood stream carries to them and change this material to forms which the green plants can use again, giving off CO 2 , water, ammonia, etc.

These cells, like the molds and other destructive plants, can live on either vegetable or animal matter, that is, we can eat either lettuce, peas, corn, apples, or meat, and derive health and strength from them all, but, like the green plants, we must have water in abundance and air, only we take oxygen from the air and give back to it the carbon dioxide which the green plants need.

In the course of this transformation in the living cells, some of the energy which the sunlight gave to the plant that was eaten is released, and our bodies make use of this energy to keep warm, to work, think, and feel.

The source of bodily heat, of human energy and power to work, is in the chemical changes which the food, whether animal or vegetable, undergoes in the cells and tissues of the body.

Everything is food for something else, each after its kind, and matter, carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen, for instance, is kept circulating like gold and silver, which is now made into amulets and images, now lining drinking cups, now buried in the earth, now stamped as coin and passing from hand to hand until melted and worked into rings again. It is gold or silver all the while.

The food of mankind is to be here considered, and we begin with the earliest and simplest, the food of the infant, milk. This is chiefly composed of five great classes of food stuffs, classes we shall find in all natural food materials.

Water; eighty-seven per cent, more than three-fourths of the whole, and we shall find that our food must always contain a large amount of water, or if it does not, that we must drink liquids to make up the amount.

The curd of the milk ; which contains not only casein but albumen and other proteids. 1 This class of substance is also found in all living things, whether animal or vegetable.

Fat; which we know best as cream or butter. This is also common to both vegetable and animal substances, as olive oil and fat of meat.

Sugar; dissolved in the water of the milk so that we do not recognize it at once. Except this sugar of milk, most sugars are derived from the juices of plants and their fruits, but so abundant and universal are these that all races of mankind have sugar in their diet.

Mineral salts ; also dissolved in the water of milk, so that we do not think about them in that form. Salt, as we put it on our food, and the fertilizer we water plants with are instances of mineral food. The mineral salts are as needful for the life of the cell as the other classes. As has been proved by experiment, it is not difficult to learn the composition of milk and the amount of the various substances which the child requires.

64 The Food Pyramid And Healthy Eating...

Most people have heard about "The Food Pyramid". It's a government created guideline for "healthy eating". It's sort of a general nutrition guide for the country.

In fact, the government (US Department of Agriculture) has recently upgraded it's food pyramid -- but the truth is that it's still an unsatisfactory guideline for people who want to lose weight.

The new pyramid is actually a number of different pyramids that can be tailored to an individual's unique circumstances. This would seem to be a move in the direction of "honest brokering" of action alternatives. But not all observers see this as a good thing.

It's positive that what they released can be more personalized. And I like the way physical activity is included graphically. But from a big point of view they missed the opportunity to make a stronger message. It's designed to not call any attention to any negative food group. I hate to say it, but what else would we expect from the USDA.

My last comment relates to how I see the pyramid. "A reflection of industry influence". "There's nothing about soda or snacks or about how many times you should eat".

It seems like the USDA dodged the difficult political advice once again and didn't clearly communicate what to eat less of. Given that obesity is the biggest health problem facing the country today. Clearly, there is no "honest brokering of science" on these issues.

I am no expert on food policy, but I would hypothesize that the differences in view on the efficacy of the food pyramid lie in differences in opinion about the role of the expert in a democracy. In other words, some will see the role of the scientist/expert to empower decision makers to take responsibility for their own choices by providing them with a set of options. Others will see the role to be something more along the lines of telling people what action they should take (i.e., narrowing the scope of choice). And of course such perspectives also reflect equity considerations, such as who wins and who loses among the users of the new pyramid (e.g., this is reflected in various comments on whether the expert target the informed and motivated public or the uniformed or otherwise disadvantaged public?). I'd pose the hypothesis that one's views on the pyramid's flexible structure will be closely correlated with one's views on the role of the scientist/expert as an honest broker or issue advocate.

Clearly the pyramid reflects a compromise of perspectives, and there is no such thing as a pure "honest broker". But it does seem that the present incarnation of the food pyramid reflects a move more in the direction of honest brokering than the previous version. The most important yet unanswered question from my standpoint is: Is there any evidence that the new incarnation better supports decision making than the past version or possible alternatives? The ultimate test of honest brokering and issue advocacy is the pragmatic test.

It's important to remember that the Food Pyramid was not created for "weight loss", it was created as a "general nutrition guide" to maintain average health.

It's supposed to be a general nutrition guide for healthy eating, so you must remember that it's not a tool meant to help you with fat loss and dieting.

In other words, it's not the best choice to help overweight people who want to get slim in a hurry.

Secondly, the new Food Pyramid is based on vague nutritional guidelines which are nearly as bureaucratic and vague as possible. It advocates that people should eat specific "ounces" of food based on a person's age, weight, gender, and other factors.

...But trying to calculate your daily food intake by using such vague guidelines is just not very fun or practical -- not to mention it's not very easy to do either.

In other words, it's not a solution for weight loss -- nor is it a practical solution for healthy eating each day. In fact, the Food Pyramid is just like most other government created "guidelines" --- which means it's the result of a bureaucratic effort which aims to give vague and general advice.

If you're looking to lose weight then you certainly don't want to use the new Food Pyramid as a tool to help you, since you likely won't see fast dieting results by doing that, since you must actually learn to spread out your daily food across more than 3 meals per day in order to lose weight fast.

To speed up your metabolism you must eat more often, not less often. You must eat more than 3 meals per day, and you must not follow some arbitrary guideline each day. Also, it's quite easy to figure out how big your food portions need to be when trying to lose weight and it has nothing to do with any pyramids.

63 Healthy Recipes For Healthy Living Includes The Apple

Saturday, 15 March 2008 - Carole-Anne Stanway
The apple was the first fruit mentioned in the bible, not always allowing the noble apple to prove the life enhancing powers it does possess. The pectin in the reddest apples has among the most antioxidants of any natural food. Science continues to show cases of high priced medications contain potent versions of what we are eating naturally all the while. A healthy recipe for healthy living does include the humble apple.

Apples come in a variety of excellent flavors, shapes, colors for us to choose from, in order to tantalize our taste buds, and encourages us to eat this great fruit right off the tree it was grown on.

Apples help our bodies fight cancer; studies have shown that there are several components in juicy fruit, such as apples, which help to prevent the growth of cancer cells. Healthy apples are most potent when the fruit is eaten whole, including the skin, and by choosing the darker apples, such as deep Red Delicious, Fuji, Jonathan, Rome Beauty and Red Spartan. Apples are a good source of vitamin C and fiber. Italian researchers found people who ate more than one apple a day lowered their risk for oral, esophageal, colon, breast, ovarian, prostate and other cancers by 9 to 42%.

Apples benefit our health by helping to fight cholesterol. Two key components, the pectin in the reddest apples and poly-phenols, which have the most anti-oxidants of any natural food, can help to lower cholesterol, and prevent the oxidation of LDL, which is the bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol results from the chemical process that fills the arteries with clogging plaque. Save the apple skin; it has two to six times the antioxidants that the actual flesh of the apple has, science shows, and most of us need all the help we can get when it comes to healthy eating.

Apples make us smarter. Apples boost the production of acetylcholine, which is a chemical that transmits messages between nerve cells. In a recent study from the University of Massachusetts, researchers suggest that apples may keep your brain 'smarter' as you age and the components help boost our memory, potentially lessening the possibility of getting Alzheimer's disease.

You know the saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". It may well be true that it is time to rethink this, and start eating your apples as a receipe for healthy living.

Apples help us to breathe easier. United Kingdom researchers found that children of pregnant women who ate apples during pregnancy, were less likely to wheeze or develop asthma by the age of five. This healthy fruit may also protect the lungs of adults, help in the prevention of asthma, lung cancer and other diseases.

Many people have eaten apples all their lives but ppeled for them in order to not take in all the pesticides used in apple growing. Recently, many have changed their thinking and have taken to organic, whenever possible, or washing the regular treated apples thoroughly, in order to eat the healthy peel. Organic is wonderful, but not always available.

The next reason to eat healthy apples daily is, that apples are a difficult food to eat; they require chewing a great deal, as they are dense and firm. This healthy food is packed with fiber, approximately five grams per apple, and is low in calories, approximately 80 for a medium sized apple. Apples contain a natural sugar which enters the bloodstream slowly, keeping our insulin levels steady; a much better choice than a sugary snack, which will give us a fast high, then a low in our sugar levels, creating hunger faster, as well as giving us little nutritional value.

Apples are truly a beneficial choice for healthy living. It is highly recommended you keep eating apples, as they are one of nature's perfect foods, and after eating these gems, you will feel full longer, keep your cholesterol lower, be smarter, breathe easier, help to boost your memory, and keep your insulin at a decent level. What more could we ask from one healthy food?

62 Introduction to Yoga Types, Philosophy & Practice

Thursday, 22 November 2007 - Anmol Mehta
Yoga is a powerful tool to help you blossom and reach your full human potential. The seeds are all within you, yoga is the water, the sunlight, the nutrients and the love they need in order to make your life vibrant, beautiful and full of sweet fragrance. It is not a religion, it is really a science with which to develop your body, mind and spirit.

The ultimate goal of Yoga, which literally means, Union, is to reunite you with the Universal Source.

61 Meditation - The Secret to Fulfilling your Destiny

Friday, 30 November 2007 - Anmol Mehta
We all know the famous quote which says that all man needs to live is food, clothing and shelter. Well, I would like to update this quote to include one more item without which I think life might as well be considered dead. The phrase I think should say, that all man needs to live is food, clothing, shelter and meditation. Yes, meditation is the one item I think should be added to complete this phrase. This is because meditation is the tool with which to accomplish the true purpose of human birth, to find the Truth, to find God.

Meditation becomes possible when food, clothing and shelter are managed. Without these bare necessities it is very difficult to embrace a deep and significant meditation practice. A hungry man with hungry children is not thinking about watching his mind, he is contemplating the source of his next meal. For those of us though, who have these necessities attended to, there is no excuse for not starting a daily meditation practice.

Unfortunately, the wisdom above is not the prevalent thinking in society today. Today the objective is to accumulate more and more wealth, power, fame and fortune. The value system in place supports this attitude. The rich, famous and powerful are respected, adored and applauded. They are held in high esteem and considered the role models to be emulated. With this perspective attention is not turned to meditation and fulfilling man's highest destiny, with this perspective the direction is always self-aggrandization.

More, more, more would have been fine if at the end one could say, I am happy, satisfied and at peace. But, if one looks around, one finds that this is just simply not the case. All around there is misery, suffering, conflict, loneliness and dissatisfaction. The more, more, more never ends and no matter how much we get, we quickly get used to it and then want even more.

I have friends who are very rich. They have plenty of money and power, but I don't see them as rich at all. Inwardly they are very poor. They are unhappy, restless and stressed. No matter how much they seem to acquire, it never quenches their thirst for more. To me the answer is clear. Their life is missing meditation. Only with meditation can the thirst be quenched, only with meditation can peace be found, only with meditation can the true purpose of life be fulfilled.

To help see the truth of this one should closely inspect one's life. One needs to ask, if achieving the material goals one had set for oneself in the past brought lasting happiness. In inspecting one's life in this way one can learn about the direction that one has so far been taking and determine if it's worth continuing in that same way.

In addition, to self inspection, one should also learn from the lives of others. Observe those that do have and see if they are significantly more happy than those who don't. For this you may have to look past the image of happiness they might be presenting, for it is important for those who have a lot, to give the appearance that all is well. Dig a little deeper, go behind the scene a bit and out comes the misery, out comes the anguish, out comes the pain. Want to be joyful, wise and loving, then meditate.

If you have food, clothing and shelter, then that is enough. Stop chasing anything more and turn your attention inward. You have the potential to uncover the treasures within, and I am telling you that to dig up this hidden infinite wealth all you need is meditation.

60 Biggest Mistake in Your Meditation Practice

Friday, 7 December 2007 - Anmol Mehta
I have been practicing meditation now for over 20 years. In these 2 decades plus, I have explored much of the spiritual landscape and discovered many of the profound treasures hidden there. Also, during this time I have made my share of mistakes and seen others make theirs. In this article I want to help you avoid repeating the biggest mistake with regard to establishing a deep and strong daily meditation practice.

It is the mistake of endless procrastination. So let's understand this detrimental behavior and also, how to change it, so that it can be removed as an obstacle forever.

The Mistake of Procrastination:

Lord Buddha said, "There are only 2 mistakes you can make in life. First mistake is not to take the first step, and the second, is that having taken the first step, to not go all the way."

I am amazed how few take the first step. Many people who talk and read about religion, spirituality, zen, yoga, meditation, etc. never actually start a personal meditation program. They even come to me and discuss these matters in great detail, but, never get down to doing it. Meditation, in this regard, is just like exercise, you can read every book on fitness, but, until you break a sweat you will have zero benefits.

There are many profound and now medically recognized benefits of meditation. More and more evidence is emerging about how meditation helps reduce stress, cure diseases, increase concentration, enhance brain capacity and improve the quality of your life, but, to enjoy these benefits you need to practice. All the reading and talking in the world will not help, you need to get busy doing it.

Solution to Procrastination:

There are several steps you can take which should help you end the habit of procrastinating your meditation practice and begin. Here are these recommendations for you.

1. Start small: Don't try to sit in meditation for one hour a day right off the bat. It will simply be too much. Although you initial burst of inspiration may get you to do that much at first, it will be very hard to sustain that intensity over the long term. The benefits of meditation are not instantaneous, they are acquired over time so a consistent practice is a must. Therefore, start with what you can easily manage and then build up from there. This will help you enjoy your practice more and also, procrastinate it less.

2. Create a meditation space: Create a small space in your home which you will use for your meditation practice. Keep everything there ready, so it is easy and inviting for you to start your daily session. Place there whatever inspires you and also keep there your cushions etc., so that when it's time for your practice there is little you have to do in order to get it started. This will go a long way in preventing thoughts the opportunity to dissuade you from getting your daily spiritual work in.

3. Stop procrastinating in general: Procrastination is really a disease. It will delay and prevent you from living your life completely. So, stop this habit, not just in the context of your meditation practice, but in general. Try your very best to do what needs to be done right away without concern for mood. Just move from one activity that requires your attention to the next, answering the call of the moment and you will find yourself building up terrific momentum.

This momentum then will spill over into all aspects of your life, including the most important, your daily meditation practice. The more you do things as soon as the time is right, the more you will find yourself free of the disease of procrastination. Free of this disease, your life will open up, your meditation practice will blossom and you will certainly fulfill your highest destiny.

59 Comprehensive Guide to Worldwide Meditation Techniques

Saturday, 10 November 2007 - Anmol Mehta
There are as many types of meditation techniques as there are wonderful flavors of ice cream. This allows each person to find a flavor that is delicious to them. In this article I will provide an overview of some of the most popular meditation techniques that exist and hopefully this will help you find the style that is sweetest to you.

Some meditation styles suit those of an intellectual disposition, while others are more attractive to those who prefer the path of love and surrender. Still others, with an active approach to life, may like the meditation techniques involving movement, while those with a strong mind would enjoy the approach of visualization and concentration. Overall, there are several broad categories under which we can capture most of these various meditation practices and the following two are amongst the most widely used styles, Insight Meditation Techniques and Sound (Mantra) Meditation Techniques.

1. Insight Meditation Techniques: These are the meditations of choice for the Gyan Yogis or those drawn to the intellectual path. It incorporates the advanced meditation techniques from the Zen school of Buddhism, the Advaita Vedanta school of Hinduism, certain schools of Western Religions among others.

A. WHO AM I Meditation Technique: This techniques comes from the school of Advaita Vedanta (Non-Dualism / End of Knowledge). The meditation was popularized by Shri Ramana Maharishi and is based on negation of the false self in order to realize one's True Nature. Here is an example of my experience with WHO AM I Meditation Practice.

B. Koan Meditation Technique: These meditations come from the Zen school of Buddhism and are designed to break down the ordinary pattern of conceptual, dualistic thinking. By breaking down the interference created by the thinking mechanism the practitioner is brought to confront the non-dual reality of "what is" directly and thus Awaken.

C. Contemplation Meditation Technique: These meditations utilize introspection, self-study, reflection, self-dialogue and contemplation to cut through the layers of false conditioning and false understanding that deludes the mind. These meditations have their roots in many Western Religions and are also a part of Eastern philosophies.

D. Silent Mind Meditation Technique: This meditation technique is my contribution to this category and it involves directly perceiving the fact of what is by acute observation of the thinking process. This is the flavor that I enjoy best and I have explained it in detail in the The Silent Mind Meditations, which are part of the Silent Mind Meditation Program. These meditations are an extension of the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti.

2. Sound (Mantra) & Intention Meditation Techniques: The meditations that fall under this category use the science of sound and thought vibrations (Naad Yoga), along with rhythm and music (Laya Yoga) to purify the heart and mind. These meditations have a wide range of applications, from bestowing Enlightenment, to improving health, wealth, happiness, peace etc...

A. Mantra Japa Meditation Technique: This meditation method uses the repetition of a mantra (a particular sound, word or phrase) verbally or mentally to create the necessary conditions for purification, refinement or expansion to take place. Mantras are essentially keys which allow one to tune into the individual energy field or tune into the Universal Energy field to produce certain desired results. Here is an example of using OM Mantra to activate the Third Eye Chakra.

B. Rhythm Meditation Technique: This form of meditation uses the combination of rhythm, chanting, music and breath to calibrate and perfect the system. The excellent Three Step Rhythmic Breathing (3srb) meditation technique of Sage Pantanjali and many Kundalini Yoga meditations fall under this category, among others.

C. Meditation via Song: Most of the meditations from the path of Devotion (Bhakti Yoga) and Love, designed to dissolve the ego belong in this category. This is a path most dear to those who are emotional in nature and feel a deep love for the divine. Christianity, Gospel, Sufi Meditations, Hare Krishna Meditations, Kirtans and Bhajans are some examples of techniques in this category.

D. Meditation via Prayer & Intention: All religions have meditations involving prayer and worship. The meditations that also use the power of intention to manifest desires fall under this category.

So you can see from above, these is a rich diversity to the science of meditation and certainly something for everybody. The best suggestion is to pick a style and with an attitude of experimentation dive in and explore it. You may be astonished at the wonderful treasures you discover within using the profound art of meditation.

58 Zen Meditation: Stop and Smell the Roses!

Wednesday, 16 April 2008 - Tenzin Palmo
How many of us walk through life wondering what our purpose is? How many of us look in a mirror and wonder who we are and what we want out of life?

Why is it that we do so? How many times have you said, 'I would like to purchase that' or 'I want to go there.' But who is 'I'? Do you really know yourself? Zen is the process of knowing who you truly are.

This is generally done by living the right way and practicing your meditation. When you live a Zen lifestyle, you can achieve happiness and contentment.

1) Importance

We rush, day to day, to do the things that need to be done. Little Johnny needs to get to soccer practice, Susan needs to get to dance, the report needs to be on your boss desk by 10 a.m., you need to make lunches, get dinner, etc.

We get to the point in which we are extremely burned out and are ready to pull someones hair out. This type of stress can age you quickly. One of the first things you should do is figure out what is important in your life.

What do you want to be doing with your time? Do not just think about it; write it down. Write down four to five things that you want to accomplish with your life, as well as four to five things you want to get done at your job.

Also, put down four to five people with whom you truly want to spend time. This should give you an idea of what is really important to you.

Next, figure out if you truly need all the commitments you have going.

Do your children really need to have three after-school activities per day? Do you need to take on more things when you are already very busy? You need to prioritize your life by choosing the things that are really necessary in your life. Instead of doing eight things a day, do three.

Take the things out of your life that you do not need to do so that you can focus more on the things that you do need to do.

2) Slow Down

One of the best ways to live a Zen lifestyle is to stop and smell the roses.

Before I had children, I rushed through my everyday tasks and landed in a heap on the couch shortly before 11 p.m. Then I had children and truly learned the meaning of the word 'multi-tasking.'

One day my three-year-old stopped me and pointed out a little caterpillar on the road. I had almost stepped on it! I was moving so fast to get to my destination that I forgot to look around at where I was going.

Most of us all rush around without noticing our surroundings? We take for granted the area in which we live. Whether you are in the city or in the country, there is always something to see.

Try slowing down when you brush your teeth, or when you are cooking supper. When you take things at a slower pace, and live in the MOMENT, you can find true enjoyment in every task.

3) One Thing at a Time

As I said, once I had children, 'Multi-task' became my middle name. I was able to cook supper, prepare my girlfriend's lunch, make the morning coffee, and work at my internet business all at the same time.

Did I enjoy it? Absolutely not.

There was no part of those tasks that was enjoyable to me, and I got to the point that I hated doing it. Instead of multitasking, try single-tasking. Do one thing at a time and do it well.

When you are making your sandwich for the next day, make an amazing sandwich. Add pickles and other vegetables and make it a truly amazing sandwich. Not only will you slow down, but you will have a wonderful sandwich to enjoy the next day.

4) Solitude

A big part of the Zen lifestyle involves learning how to live with solitude. Some people are scared of the quiet and being alone, but there is nothing to be scared of.

The quiet and solitude can give you time to meditate about your day and about your life. Even if you choose to sit back and quietly enjoy a book, the silence gives your brain time to work through everything that has occurred since the last moments you had in silence.

Living a Zen lifestyle is about minimizing the things you do not need and maximizing the things that are important. In doing this, you can achieve peacefulness and a sense of self.

57 Zen and the Art of Business Building

Tuesday, 24 June 2008 - Mary C. Davis
I make no claims of being a Zen master or, even, of knowing a lot about this branch of Buddhism. Yet, the lessons I've learned about business building so far seem to be remarkably compatible with my basic understanding of Zen philosophy -- particularly the idea of "turning the eye inward".

In the past, I constantly sought external answers about how to build a business. And while I learned and applied some very valuable information, I ended up feeling overwhelmed, stressed and, sometimes, out of alignment with the recommended tactics. After all, I was exclusively listening to business experts tell me what I must do and how to do it.

However, one day, within this maze of management and marketing theory and tactics, I experienced an awakening. This led me to look inside for spontaneous inspiration and to assess if the information I was receiving from external sources was true for me and consistent with my business vision and values.

Tuning into your own guidance is the most important habit you'll develop as you build your business. It's the hallmark of inspired business planning and underpins every step of the process. You'll find it especially helpful for the fourth step: to determine the action steps associated with your business intentions, objectives and targets.

Accessing Your Own Guidance

One of my favourite Zen stories is "The Cup of Tea". A professor visited a Zen master to inquire about Zen. The Zen master poured his guest a cup of tea until the cup was overflowing. The professor protested, "Enough -- no more can go into the cup!" "Like this cup, you're full of your own opinions and speculations" replied the Zen master, "How can I show you Zen if you don't first empty your cup?"

With all the information you've been absorbing about how to build your business, you may find yourself in the same position as the professor. You may have a lot of information inside that has come to you from other people's experiences with business building. But to determine what tactics are the "right" ones for you, you may need to empty your cup first.

In Zen Buddhism, seated meditation or "zazen" is a discipline practitioners use to calm the body and mind and experience insight. How can you quieten your body/mind and tap into your own wisdom and guidance? What practice or practices will help you to do this?

Discerning the Action Steps of Your Business Plan

There's nothing inherently wrong with learning business principles and techniques from other people. In fact, as the chief executive officer and manager of your business, you may need to learn some new skills to help you operate your business successfully. However, your own inner wisdom will guide and inspire you in applying these principles and determining which business building tactics are right for you.

If you've completed the first three steps of inspired business planning, you've built the foundation of your business plan. In the first step, you articulated the higher purpose of your business; in step two, you set business intentions for the key areas of your business; and in step three, you established objectives and targets for each business intention. For step four, the action steps of your plan will emerge from the objectives and targets you've identified.

Building on the objectives/targets you've set for each key business area, allow these questions to stimulate your inner guidance to discern your right action steps:

Business Management and Administration

What steps can I take to create planning, financial and administrative systems that work well for my business?

Business Support

What steps can I take to get the support I need to grow my business?

Relationship Building With Your Target Market

What steps can I take to build a relationship with my target market in five different ways?

Service and Product Development

What steps can I take to develop services and products that meet my target market's needs?

Promotion

What steps can I take to market these services and products in five different ways that feel authentic and heart-centered?

Financial Well-Being

What steps can I take to allow financial flow in my business?

Consider using mind mapping when you answer these questions to engage both your left and right brain. And don't worry if you only come up with one or two action steps for each category. If you begin with the next step that's clear to you right now, your inspiration will guide you to subsequent steps over time. In the words of Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, just "smile, breathe and go slowly".

56 The Secret to Understanding Zen Meditation

Wednesday, 21 November 2007 - Anmol Mehta
The key to understanding Zen Buddhism is to understand the phrase "I don't know." In this phrase is hidden the secrets of Zen and Zen Meditation. At first glance this may seem counter intuitive or just a play on words, but I assure you that is not the case. This is really the essence of Zen and once you grasp what is being implied here, all the Zen teachings will start to make sense.

The problem, according to Zen is not "not-knowing", it is in fact knowing too much. What needs to be qualified here is the type of knowledge that is being referred to. There is knowledge that is factual, such as the distance to the moon or the elemental makeup of water, but the knowledge that is being indicated here, is the knowledge having to do with our security and happiness. In other words, all that we know about what we ought to be doing to get out of life maximum happiness, is the knowledge that we need to purge ourselves of.

For ease of communication I will call this knowledge "Emotional Knowledge", as it relates to how we need to go about increasing pleasure/happiness and decreasing pain/sorrow. This Emotional Knowledge, Zen is saying, is what drives us to endlessly seek and endlessly be restless. In other words, having accepted innumerable theories on how we need our life to be in order to be happy, we are caught in a cycle of endless desire chasing these goals. Zen says, drop Emotional Knowledge or at least don't emphasize it and instead just be open to the moment and meet the challenge of life which is right under your nose.

It is very hard to really say "I Don't Know." All kinds of theories, beliefs, ideologies, philosophies have been forced into us since we were impressionable children, which now dominate our mind and lives. We feel we need to do this or that in order to get this or that, which at the end will make us happy. Unfortunately, this approach has failed. Human beings always get used to what they have and then inevitably start to demand more. It just does not matter what it is or how much you have. You will eventually get used to having it and then will want more. The only way out of this endless cycle of desire is to surrender to the sate of "I Don't Know."

When you can really say "I Don't Know", then there is little for the mind to chase and pursue. Then you just look at life and do what is necessary and as you continue on in this way of living in the moment, desire starts to lose its grip on you. In Zen this is called mindful living. Real freedom then makes its welcome appearance as awareness, free now from outward seeking, moves inward and reveals the secrets hidden deep within us.

To work towards this state of "I Don't Know", you need to question all your desires. Too often, in this atmosphere of commercialism, we have been seduced by clever advertisement and social propaganda. Corporations and those in power need you to buy into the happy, pleasurable future they are promising, else they will either lose their sale or your vote. So you need to see if you can remain untouched by this atmosphere of endless consumption. Once you buy in, then you are in the rat race, because now you think you know what you need to get to be happy and so you are off and running, if you don't buy in you stand apart and are free.

So next time someone asks you, What is it that you want in life? Look at them and just smile. Welcome to the wonderful world of Zen.

55 Health Benefits of the Chinese Green Tea Diet

Tuesday, 20 February 2007 - Julie Health
Dating back more than 4,000 years, Chinese green tea diet has been long revered as a tasty drink that can ward off diseases and improve one's well-being. There are only a few herbs that can surpass its impressive history.

Since its first recorded use during the time of Emperor Shen Nung, the link between Chinese green tea diet and good health has never been severed. Today, further studies are made to test the benefits of the remarkable health elixir.

Traditional Health Benefits of the Diet

According to tradition, this diet could cure anything from headaches, body aches, and pains to constipation and depression. Over the centuries, more health claims are made on account of the Chinese green tea diet.

It detoxifies the body. The presence of polyphenols, a naturally occurring antioxidant in this particular tea, is said to combat harmful free radicals and help keep the body free from diseases. In this regard, Chinese green tea helps maintain the overall well-being of the body. It fights against the anti-aging process because the antioxidants can boost immunity, preserve young-looking skin, and brighten the eyes.

Additional health benefits of the green tea is it increases the blood flow throughout the body. Because it contains a little caffeine, ingesting this drink stimulates the heart and allows the blood to flow more freely through the blood vessels. For the same reason that tea stimulates blood flow, it also stimulates mental clarity.

For many years, men of science remained skeptical about the health claims made by Chinese green tea diet enthusiasts because the health benefits are truly vast in number. Their doubt was changed to a more positive reception when subsequent researchers proved its disease-preventing attributes and confirmed most of the health claims.

The Heart

Study after study has shown that drinking green tea and eating polyphenol-rich foods reduces the risk of any heart complications. It helps strengthen the blood vessels that provide oxygen and valuable nutrients to the heart and brain. It has also been researched that men who use the diet have a 75 percent less possibility of having a stroke than those who don't use the diet.

The green tea diet helps lower total cholesterol levels and improve the ratio between LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. Study shows that men who drink nine or more cups of Chinese green tea daily have lower cholesterol levels than those who drink fewer than two cups. While nine cups may seem a lot, break it up through out the day and you'll realize it's not that difficult to drink that many cups. You could have one during and after each meal and during your breaks.

You really need to learn more. The Silent Killer Exposed uncovers and gives you the information you need to maintain a healthy blood system. Visit it here now.

Longevity

The role of the 'Chinese diet' in promoting longevity has been investigated upon by many researchers. They found the premise of their study on observing Japanese women who are greater-than-average green tea drinkers; have lower mortality rates compared to others. This led the researchers to believe that the diet has "a protective factor against premature death."

The polyphenols found in the diet may be held accountable. With its high amount of polyphenols, it seems to have a stimulating effect on the immune system. A stronger immune system as a result of drinking the green tea helps reduce risks of obtaining many illnesses.

If these health benefits of doing the Chinese green tea diet don't motivate you to start drinking this miracle in a cup, chances are you'll never become motivated to loose weight. So start today and drink up. The health benefits go well beyond weight loss!

54 Explore The Healthy Power Of Berries

Explore The Healthy Power Of BerriesSunday, 24 May 2009 - Emma Arsanti
Who doesn’t know berries?

Berries come in a wide variety of favors, shapes and sizes, and have their own unique health benefits. Some of the more popular berries include Marionberries, gooseberries, huckleberries, chokeberries, currants, loganberries, boysenberries and many more.

Most of the fruit berry contains vitamin antioxidants, vitamin A in the form of beta-karoten, vitamins C and E. Therefore, the berry fruit is very important for the immune. Long established folk lore dating back many centuries, records that berries were used for their claimed medicinal benefits in alleviating a wide variety of conditions from sore throats, to cardiovascular conditions, relief of eye strain, cancers, benefits in the onset of ageing conditions, and treatment of urinary infections.

Blueberry who came from North America is pure berry. Grow wild, blueberry valued because of the color blue is not just only beautiful, but also contain ingredients that reduce the risk of several diseases including cancer. Also with blackcurrant. Blackcurrant rich in vitamin C. In addition can be processed into jelly or syrup, it is also commonly used for cooking, especially in the sauce and meat dish.

Whether they are eaten raw, mixed together and served as a salad or blended together as a smoothie, layer mixed berries and whipped cream in a parfait glass for an elegant dessert. Berries can be a nutritious and delicious way to get some vital nutrients and phytochemicals that the body needs to stay strong and healthy. So, I don’t need to underline, that berries are definitely healthy foods!

53 Some Of The Best Reasons You Should Be Following A Seafood Diet

Sunday, 18 February 2007 - Gregg Hall
Eating seafood is part of a healthy diet. Since we are living in a health and weight conscious society find foods that are high in beneficial proteins and low on saturated fats are quite important. The health benefits of seafood can be the lowering of cholesterol, lowering the risk of heart disease, lowering the risk of stroke, and building muscle.

It is easily apparent to see the effects of a high seafood diet when visiting a coastal community. In general these people live longer healthier lives. Fish and seafood with higher protein can prevent weight gain naturally, and it is easier to digest. It is a natural and easily obtainable food source in some areas making is a good alternative for red meat or poultry.

Omega 3

The essential oil in seafood is Omega 3; this can be found in fatty fish like tuna, salmon, and sardines. These have high levels of two kinds of Omega 3 fatty acids are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is recommended by physicians to have at least two portions in a week. They keep the heart healthy and help to prevent future cardiovascular disease and lower blood pressure. There is also evidence that fish can help prevent and possible alleviate some mood disorders, making it not only heart healthy but brain food too.

White fleshed fish, in particular, is lower in fat than any other source of animal protein, and oilier fish contain substantial quantities of omega 3s or the "good" fats in a diet plan. Fish does not contain the "bad" fats, omega 6 fatty acids, which are commonly found in red meat.

The high content of poly unsaturated fatty acids in seafood lowers serum cholesterol levels. Omega 3 fatty acids change the critical balance of certain blood components called lipoproteins, reducing low density lipoproteins and very low density lipoproteins that deposit cholesterol along the artery walls. Fish is low in saturated fat and provides the body with essential vitamins and minerals, such as, vitamins A, B, and D; zinc, iron, and selenium.

Dietary Advantages

Seafood can go a long way toward helping consumers achieve dietary goals. Most shellfish are low in fat, with a total composition of less the 5% fat; many varieties have less than 1% fat. Thus, with such a small amount of total fat, most seafood provides only 190 calories for a 3 ounce serving, cooked. But for a healthier choice, go for the poached, baked, or grilled fish, rather than fried. Fried fish is much higher in fat, especially if it is cook in a batter. This does not mean you can't enjoy the occasional fish and chips; it is just healthier not to counteract the good oils with the bad.

52 How meditation can help children

I often get the impression that most people do not enjoy their job. You can tell by looking at their faces on the way to work in the morning. So I know I've been so lucky. Being a professional children's entertainer for over ten years was a wonderful way to work and live. Perhaps one of life's deepest satisfactions is to entertain and bring lightness into the lives of others. Working with children also brought the child out in me and on so many occasions I was aware that I was entertaining myself. Unfortunately, during the last ten years, I've watched both the world and children change dramatically.

A few years ago, one particular event brought home to me that it was time for me to change, time for me to step out of my entertainer's comfort zone and begin to offer children a little more than fun and games. I was asked to entertain a group of children for two hour party. I arrived to find fifteen shouting, yelling, screaming seven-year-old boys. It was complete pandemonium, with absolutely no sign that they were going to sit down and pay attention to me. It was the children's entertainer's nightmare scenario - parents gone, a room full of hyperactive kids and two hours to fill. The only way I could get their interest was to promise to show them something they had never seen or done before. Slowly but surely I managed to get their attention long enough to get them to lie on the floor. Then I led them into a visualisation exercise. After twenty minutes every single one had calmed down. Two of them even fell asleep. The contrast with those first moments could not have been greater. The whole exercise was one big message about what I needed to do next with my life.

For some time, I had been noticing that it was becoming harder to connect with more and more children. Whether it's down to diet, lifestyle, lack of parental attention or too much TV and computer games, I became increasingly aware of children in need of specific help, and it wasn't entertainment. The main signs of a child not maturing as they should include not being able to concentrate at all, unable to sit still for a moment, nervousness disguised as hyperactivity, extreme insecurity, unable to be alone and constantly seeking some form of attention. But by far the most concerning behaviour is the almost constant reactivity. Increasingly rare is the child who acts after consciously thinking and deciding what they are going to do.

All these behaviours are simply a cry for help. So in response to this call from kids, I set up Relax Kids. It's my way of helping kids learn what no one ever teaches them, which is how to be peaceful wherever and whenever they want, how to concentrate their mind, how to use their imagination in a focussed and positive way and how to push the pause button and consider options before action.

Recently, one mother told me how she had created the habit of rushing everything. Her mantra in life had become, 'There's not enough time.' Everything she did was accompanied by this voice in her head, which would regularly emerge in her words as, 'There's not enough time.'

Then one day her five-year-old daughter, who was about to begin a simple non-urgent task, said, 'Mummy I think we don't have enough time.' It stopped her in her tracks as she realised what she was passing on. Another dimension to this illusion of time famine is parents using TV and computers to keep children occupied while they lose themselves in a flurry of their own activities. This trend is now coming home to roost, as many schools are now finding that children don't know how to talk to each other. Before any meaningful learning can begin, they have to teach children basic communication skills. E-mailing, texting and televisions are all threatening to create a new generation of adults who don't know how to really communicate. We already see the result of this in some communities. The inability to control oneself and to articulate one's thoughts and feelings means those thoughts and emotions come straight out at the level of behaviour. The price we pay is an increasingly violent society.

However, by far the most concerning trend is the number of children on anti-depressants or energy suppressants. Recent research has indicated that over 50,000 children in the UK are on anti-depressants. These are simply quick and violent ways to manage a child's energy. It all comes down to adults not being prepared to teach children how to manage themselves, which means how to manage their minds. But that's hard, because parents themselves have never been taught how to manage their own imagination, thoughts and feelings. They don't know how to use their own mind or control their emotions. Which means parents need to learn for themselves how to stay calm, maintain a positive attitude and be creative before they can teach their children. This is a massive challenge, especially when parents don't want to see themselves as teachers and tend to be dependent on the education system to do this work. But the system can't do this work because it's too busy helping children cram facts into their young memories.

So that's where Relax Kids comes in. It's for children and parents. Yes it is primarily to help children, but I know that to do that I also need to help parents. It's essential for a child to know how to relax their mind and body, but it doesn't help when they go home to a stressed parent always rushing and always worrying. That's why Relax Kids is for both parent and child. One of the most frequent kinds of feedback that I receive when people use any of the visualisations, stories or exercises I give them for their children, is when they say,'I enjoyed doing that exercise for my child so much. I felt so relaxed, so peaceful within myself. Actually I think that was for me just as much as them'.

I wrote most of the visualisations and meditations for the first Relax Kids book in March 2002, while I was sitting on top of a mountain in India. The air was pure, the atmosphere cool and silent and my mind was fresh and clear. With each word came a profound experience of peace and lightness. And, as I wrote the meditations, I seemed to travel into the fairyland I would like children and their parents to feel when reading the book.

Like every child, I was always deeply fascinated by fairy stories and, as an adult, they have played a major part in my work, both as a children's entertainer and a children's theatre director. I think the reason we are so attracted to fairy stories is that they touch something deep inside us. Within each story lies our deepest desire for ultimate love, happiness and truth. These are like the foundation stones of a contented and creative mind. They are the building blocks of a positive attitude and proactive behaviour.

So, these story- visualisations have been designed to encourage your child's imagination and creativity. In the process, I hope that they will lead them into the same positive and peaceful emotional state that I felt when I was seated on my mountain top in India.

Sometimes the last thing we feel like doing is reading a story to our child at bedtime - which is why the book is also designed to give parents space to relax alongside their child. There are affirmations at the bottom of each page to help parents to create a suitable mind set and atmosphere, so aiding their child's relaxation as well as their own.

I see a challenging time ahead for us all. It's obvious the world is not going to slow down, or that the external stimulants which prey on our senses and sensibilities will become any less. I also see the huge challenge facing every parent who must finds ways to help their child put down the right inner foundations for the growth and development of a strong mind and discerning intellect. But most of all, I feel for today's and tomorrows children. No other generation has come into the world and had to face such an onslaught of fast paced change, ruthless marketing and multitasking super busy parents. Relax Kids is first and foremost for them.

51 SPIRITUALITY: Blues For Buddha

Blues for Buddha
By Jed McKenna

Being critical of Buddhism isn't easy.

Buddhism is the most likable of the major religions, and Buddhists are the perennial good guys of modern spirituality. Beautiful traditions, lovely architecture, inspiring statuary, ancient history, the Dalai Lama — what's not to like?

Everything about Buddhsim is just so... nice. No fatwahs or jihads, no inquisitions or crusades, no terrorists or pederasts, just nice people being nice. In fact, Buddhism means niceness. Nice-ism.

At least, it should.

Buddha means Awakened One, so Buddhism can be taken to mean Awake-ism. Awakism. It would therefore be natural to think that if you were looking to wake up, then Buddhism, i.e., Awakism, would be the place to look.

::: The Light is Better Over Here

Such thinking, however, would reveal a dangerous lack of respect for the opposition. Maya, goddess of delusion, has been doing her job with supreme mastery since the first spark of self-awareness flickered in some chimp's noggin, and the idea that the neophyte truth-seeker can just sign up with the Buddhists, read some books, embrace some new concepts and slam her to the mat might be a bit on the naive side.

On the other hand, why not? How’d this get so turned around? It’s just truth. Shouldn’t truth be, like, the simplest thing? Shouldn’t someone who wants to find something as ubiquitous as truth be able to do so? And here’s this venerable organization supposedly dedicated to just that very thing, even named for it, so what’s the problem?

::: Why doesn’t Buddhism produce Buddhas?

The problem arises from the fact that Buddhists, like everyone else, insist on reconciling the irreconcilable. They don’t just want to awaken to the true, they also want to make sense of the untrue. They want to have their cake and eat it too, so they end up with nonsensical theories, divergent schools, sagacious doubletalk, and zero Buddhas.

Typical of Buddhist insistence on reconciling the irreconcilable is the concept of Two Truths, a poignant two-word joke they don’t seem to get, and yet this sort of perversely irrational thinking is at the very heart of the failed search for truth. We don’t want truth, we want a particular truth; one that doesn't threaten ego, one that doesn’t exist. We insist on a truth that makes sense given what we know, not knowing that we don't know anything.

Nothing about Buddhism is more revealing than the Four Noble Truths which, not being true, are of pretty dubious nobility. They form the basis of Buddhism, so it's clear from the outset that the Buddhists have whipped up a proprietary version of truth shaped more by market forces than any particular concern for the less consumer-friendly, albeit true, truth.

Yes, Buddhism may be spiritually filling, even nourishing, but insofar as truth is concerned, it's junkfood. You can eat it every day of your life and die exactly as Awakened as the day you signed up.

::: Bait & Switch

Buddhism is a classic bait-and-switch operation. We’re attracted by the enlightenment in the window, but as soon as we’re in the door they start steering us over to the compassion aisle. Buddhists could be honest and change their name to Compassionism, but who wants that?

There's the rub. They can’t sell compassion and they can’t deliver enlightenment.

This untruth-in-advertising is the kind of game you have to play if you want to stay successful in a business where the customer is always wrong. You can either go out of business honestly, or thrive by giving the people what they want. What they say they want and what they really want, though, are two very different things.

::: Me Me Me

To the outside observer, much of Buddhist knowledge and practice seems focused on spiritual self-improvement. This, too, is hard to speak against... except within the context of awakening from delusion. Then it's easy.

There is no such thing as true self, so any pursuit geared toward its aggrandizement, betterment, upliftment, elevation, evolution, glorification, salvation, etc, is utter folly. How much more so any endeavor undertaken merely to increase one's own happiness or contentment or, I'm embarrassed to even say it, bliss?

Self is ego and ego is the realm of the dreamstate. If you want to break free of the dreamstate, you must break free of self, not stroke it to make it purr or groom it for some imagined brighter future.

::: Maya's House of Enlightenment

The trick with being critical of so esteemed and beloved an institution is not to get dragged down into the morass of details and debate. It's very simple: If Buddhism is about enlightenment, people should be getting enlightened. If it's not about enlightenment, they should change the sign.

Of course, Buddhism isn't completely unique in its survival tactics. This same gulf between promise and performance is found in all systems of human spirituality. We're looking at it in Buddhism because that's where it's most pronounced. No disrespect to the Buddha is intended. If there was a Buddha and he was enlightened, then it's Buddhism that insults his memory, not healthy skepticism. Blame the naked emperor's retinue of tailors and lickspittles, not the boy who merely states the obvious.

Buddhism is arguably the most elevated of man's great belief systems. If you want to enjoy the many valuable benefits it has to offer, then I wouldn't presume to utter a syllable against it. But if you want to escape from the clutches of Maya, then I suggest you take a very close look at the serene face on all those golden statues to see if it isn't really hers.

50 Foods & Beverages to Avoid

If you’re struggling to whittle down your midsection and achieve the “six pack” that has become synonymous with good abdominals, you’re certainly not alone. The battle of the bulge is a common one -- and, all too often, a losing one -- in today’s hectic world of fast food and super-sized indulgences.

What many people quickly come to realize is that committing to a disciplined regimen of abdominal exercises is usually not the only component in achieving a trimmer waistline. Although there are some exceptions, a large majority of us will also need to focus on diet to obtain the results we want. Hundreds of crunches a day won’t counteract a daily menu of fatty, greasy foods.

While there are many foods that are touted for their advantageous impact on flatter abdominals, there’s a flip side of the coin, too. Certain foods and beverages have been shown to directly counteract your efforts to reduce belly fat, contributing to the dreaded “spare tire” we all want to avoid. Below, we’ve compiled a listing of these abdominal adversaries. If you must indulge in any of these, remember that moderation (and portion size) is key.

Excessive Amounts of Carbohydrates

We’re not recommending that you cut them out of your diet entirely, but too many carbs can cause bloating and weight gain. Your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which nestles itself into your muscles in the form of water-retaining glycogen. When planning your menu, choose your carbs carefully. For example, fruits and vegetables are better carb choices than bread, pasta, and other gas-producing starches.

Empty Calorie Foods

While they may taste great, these high-carb treats aren’t doing you any favors in the abdominal department. Avoid any foods that are high in carbohydrates or sodium, such as sweets, candy, and greasy fast foods. These are usually lacking in nutrients, with little to no fiber content. Filling up on this type of fare will gain you little in the way of energy and much more in the way of bloating.

Carbonated Beverages

Many dieters believe that drinking zero-calorie soda won’t have a negative impact on their physique, but the truth is that the carbonation in fizzy drinks -- even sparkling water -- can cause belly bloating when the gas from the carbonation settles in the stomach. Also, the artificial sweeteners used in many diet drinks can have a bloating effect. Stick to iced tea or regular spring water for best results.

High-fiber Foods

Although fiber is generally viewed as an aid in achieving a trimmer tummy, too much of a good thing can go bad. Some high-fiber foods can cause a puffy midsection when consumed in large quantities. Be selective when munching on such offenders as beans, cabbage, garlic, broccoli, onions, and sprouts.

Milk & Dairy Products

For those with lactose intolerance, milk and dairy products can cause bloating and discomfort in the abdominal area. To counteract this, opt for calcium supplements instead.

Salt & High-sodium Foods

Sodium is a known culprit when it comes to bloating of the midsection and gastrointestinal discomfort. Try to stay away from processed foods, such as pre-packaged meats, and foods with large amounts of seasoning. Also, refrain from liberal amounts of salt when preparing your own meals.

Alcohol

The occasional social drink is fine, but a little goes a long way. Large amounts of alcoholic beverages --especially in the evening -- are proven to have a bloating effect.

Avoiding these foods and beverages -- or, at a minimum, reducing their prominence in your daily diet -- will aid you tremendously in your efforts to achieve lean, sculpted abdominals.

49 Learn To Care For Your Food

Although, as has been explained, the selection and preparation of foods require much consideration from the housewife who desires to get good results in COOKING, there is still one thing to which she must give attention if she would keep down the cost of living, and that is the care of food. Unless food is properly taken care of before it is cooked, as well as after it is cooked--that is, the left-overs--considerable loss is liable to result through its spoiling or decaying. Both uncooked and cooked food may be kept wholesome in several ways, but before these are discussed it may be well to look into the causes of spoiling. With these causes understood, the methods of caring for foods will be better appreciated, and the results in buying, storing, and handling foods will be more satisfactory.

To come to a knowledge of why foods spoil, it will be well to note that nature abounds in micro-organisms, or living things so minute as to be invisible to the naked eye. These micro-organisms are known to science as microbes and germs, and they are comprised of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, a knowledge of which is of the utmost importance to the physician and the farmer, as well as the housewife. Just in what ways these are beneficial to the farmer and the physician is beyond the scope of the subject of COOKING, but in the household their influence is felt in three ways: They are the cause of the decay and spoiling of foods; they are of value in the preparation of certain foods; and they are the cause of contagious diseases. It will thus be seen that while some microbes are undesirable, others exert a beneficial action.

It is only within comparatively recent years that the action of micro-organisms has been understood. It is now definitely known that these minute living things seize every possible chance to attack articles of food and produce the changes known as fermentation, putrefaction, souring, and decay. Micro-organisms that cause fermentation are necessary in bread making and vinegar making, but they are destructive to other foods, as, for example, those which are canned or preserved. Organisms that cause putrefaction are needed in the making of sauer kraut, salt rising bread, and cheese. Molds also help to make cheese, but neither these nor putrefactive organisms are desirable for foods other than those mentioned. It should be remembered, however, that even those foods which require micro-organisms in their making are constantly in danger of the attacks of these small living things, for unless something is done to retard their growth they will cause food to sour or decay and thus become unfit for consumption.

Some foods, of course, withstand the attacks of micro-organisms for longer periods of time than others. For example, most fruits that are protected by an unbroken skin will, under the right conditions, keep for long periods of time, but berries, on account of having less protective covering, spoil much more quickly. Likewise, vegetables without skins decay faster than those with skins, because they have no protective covering and contain more water, in which, as is definitely known, most micro-organisms thrive.

If food is to be kept from decaying, the housewife must endeavor to prevent the growth of micro-organisms, and she can best accomplish this if she is familiar with the ways in which they work. It is for this reason that, whether she possesses a scientific knowledge of bacteria or not, an understanding of some practical facts concerning why food spoils and how to keep it from decaying is imperative. In this part of COOKING, as in every other phase, it is the reason why things should be done that makes all that relates to the cooking of food so interesting. In all parts of the work there are scientific facts underlying the processes, and the more the housewife learns about these, the more she can exercise the art of COOKING, which, like all other arts, depends on scientific principles.

48 The Noble Eightfold Path

The Noble Eightfold Path also known in other languages and cultures as Sanskrit Ārya 'ṣṭāṅga mārgaḥ, Chinese Bāzhèngdào and Pāli Ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, is a Buddhist tradition taught by the Buddha Śākyamuni. According to instruction, this Path, which takes its place as the fourth part amidst the fundamental Buddhist teachings known as the Four Noble Truths, is supposed to guide followers along a road that ends suffering.

The Noble Eightfold Path in a nutshell is the Buddhists practical guide to end suffering or dukkha. If covers mental rehabilitation, ethics and mind de-conditioning, divided into eight elements that are subdivided into three main categories:

Wisdom (refers to the mental aspect)
1. Right understanding
2. Right intention

Ethical conduct
3. Right speech
4. Right action
5. Right livelihood

Mental discipline
6. Right effort
7. Right mindfulness
8. Right concentration

Note these are not steps to follow, but a well-rounded process. In fact, the Buddhist symbol for the Noble Eightfold Path is a wheel with eight spokes that represent the path’s eight elements.

The Noble Eightfold Path, if viewed in the light of modern cognitive psychology, would be compared to cognitive dissonance or the not getting along of two cognitions. In relation to this concept, some believe that Buddhism focuses around emotions, sensations, cognition and feelings. And Buddha focuses on emotional; desire-related or aversion-related, plus cognitive suffering causes; ignorance-related along with the idea that all things are not perfect, not satisfactory, not necessary.

If viewed in the light of psychology, the Noble Eightfold Path tries to repair differences by changing thought and behavior. Hence the first element of the path seeks the right understanding how the mind views the world in reality. And continuing, how through wisdom, this worldview interacts with thought, what controls actions.

47 Buddhism

Buddha Dharma, known by many as Buddhism, is also referred to as "the teachings of the awakened one." It revolves around the teachings of Gautama Buddha or Pali Gotama Buddha, an India native from approximate fifth century, before (the) Common (or Christian) Era, and is also referred to as a religion, psychological discipline and a passage of life.

History has it that Buddha was born a prince in Nepal, formerly Lumbini, to a wealthy family. Indulging in a life of luxury, he grew discontent at 29 years of age, and found that life’s pleasures were temporary and would never bring about lasting joy because of sickness, aging and death that must meet everyone regardless of circumstance.

So Buddha left his family palace life, even his wife and child. He became a wanderer seeking peace for nearly five years until he was enlightened while meditating under a tree at Bodh Gaya. His enlightenment brought about ideas which he eventually decided to teach to others, including about:

- the nature of existence.
- a path leading to release from inherent suffering.
- our re-birth many times, depending upon our deeds and actions, both resulting in good and bad.
- the idea of a permanent self or soul being illusion.

Buddha did not say he was God, and founded the religion without God; some say Buddha Dharma is, “A religion without a God.” After about forty-five years, having supposedly finding an end to suffering, Buddha died (88 years old). His departing instructions to followers were, “Strive on with diligence.”

After the death of Gautama Buddha, Buddha Dharma spread across the country and continued across the entire continent covering the major areas; Southeast, Central and East Asia. It is now a modern day religion among 350 + million people, possibly even over 700 million, by some statistics, and ranks fifth among religions worldwide, following Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and traditional Chinese, in that order. Among organized religions worldwide, Buddha Dharma ranks fourth; their Sangha (monk order) ranks the oldest. Buddha Dharma continues to grow and in the modern day world consists of three traditions: Mahāyāna, Sanskrit: Sthaviravāda or Theravāda and Vajrayāna Buddhism.

46 Types Of Buddhism

There are two types of Buddhas. And both seemingly reach a level of enlightenment called Nirvana, the end of suffering (while still alive here on Earth) and acquire some supernatural powers. This is a brief about both types of Buddhas.

In the Pali Canon, a collection of 16 volumes containing12,800 pages of translation about communications about the study of Buddha Dharma’s ideaology / spirituality, the transcripts reference two types of Buddhas. These are Samyaksambuddha or Sammasambuddha and Pratyeka Buddha or Paccekabuddha. A brief description of each follows.

Samyaksambuddhas (Pali: Sammasambuddha) Students of this order reach Buddhahood. Then they teach other people about the truth or enlightenment of Buddha Dharma and teaching his methodology / philosophy / ideology / religion, guiding them to a sense of spiritual awakening. Siddhartha Gautama, referred to as The Historical Buddha, fits in this category type, described as a Samyak-sambuddha.

Pratyekabuddhas (Pali: Paccekabuddha) Somewhat similar to the Samyaksambuddhas above in that they reach the state of Nervana with powers, this type of Buddha is also known as Silent Buddhas, becuase they decided to not share their knowledge with others.

Disciples of a Sammasambuddha are called Savakas (hearers or followers) or Arahants (Noble One). These terms have slightly varied meanings but can all be used to describe the enlightened disciple. Anubuddha is a rarely used term, but was used by the Buddha in the Khuddakapatha as to those who become Buddhas after being given instruction. Enlightened disciples attain Nirvana and Parinirvana as the two types of Buddhas do. The most generally used term for them is Arahant.

One 12th century Theravadin commentary uses the term Savakabuddha to describe the enlightened disciple. According to this scripture there are 3 types of Buddhas. In this case, however, the common definition of the meaning of the word Buddha (as one who discovers the Dhamma without a teacher) does not apply any more. Mainstream Theravadin and Mahayana scriptures do not recognize this term and state there are only two kinds of Buddha.

45 Buddhism Based On The Pali Canon

Some think of Buddhism as the right way to escape from a make-believe state of mind. The Buddhism is based on the interpretation and study of the collection of communications of Buddha Dharma. These communications are all translated into English by the Pali Text Society, the contents of which are extracted from around 5,000 pages within 16 volumes of translated communications that are part of the Pali Canon Collection (Tipitaka), boasting a total of 12,800 pages.

Regarding the right way to escape, Buddhism references this as escape from the satisfaction and the peril of the senses (self-indulgence). An excellent analogy presented by their teaching of this concept is like when a person attends a movie theater today to watch a fictional or make-believe movie with a fake reality. Once inside, the theater presents itself as ancient, on fire and falling a part, a painful source for you. As you look to the left, right, up or back, you spot Dharma of Buddhism, the exit sign: escape.

This escape take you through permanent pain, suffering and anguish. It takes you through the painful, continuous cycle of rebirth, decay, dying, death. Plus escape takes you through the painful things in between: struggle, anguish, peril along the way, etc. So you must follow the exit sign, which turns out to be Buddhism, with a sign of its own saying, “This way to leave anguish behind; this way to safety.” The decision about when to go, when to escape the pain, is up to each person.

44 Who Was Buddha Or Siddhartha Gautama?

Founder of Buddhism, Pāli: Gotama Buddha or Gautama Buddha was a spiritual instructor in ancient India, between an estimated 563 BCE and 483 BCE (possibly even a century later).

An excellent book on Buddha’s life is, “Introduction to Buddhism,” by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. He discusses how Buddha being the founder of the Buddhist religion called Buddha Shakyamuni, after Buddha’s real last name “Shakya” combined with “Muni” for Able One. A lesson in history tells the story of his life:

History Lesson
Long ago around 624 BC, King Shuddhodana and Queen Mayadevi Lumbini reigned in an area now belonging to Nepal, then referred to as northern India. The queen has a dream one evening that a white elephant came down from the heavens or more specifically Tushita heaven, the Pure Land of Buddha Maitreya, and penetrated her womb. This elephant told the queen that she was had just conceived a baby, a powerful and pure being, from the same place the elephant was from, Tushita heaven, the Pure Land of Buddha Maitreya.

When Queen Mayadevi went into labor, she did not suffer painfully as most women do with birthing pains. Instead, the queen encountered or was a part of a vision, said to be pure and special. In this vision, she was standing with a branch of a tree held in her right hand. While this was going on, gods Indra and Brahma lifted the baby effortlessly and without pain from her, and ceremoniously honored him, AKA Buddha Skakyamuni, offering ritual ablutions to him.

Royal prince Buddha Skakyamuni was born. Or more to point, when the King Shuddhodana saw his son and felt as though he had fulfillment of his own wishes, he named his young prince "Siddhartha."

The king asked for predictions about his son’s future from a Brahmin seer. And the seer conducted a careful investigation.

He found that the prince could become either a world ruler or chakravatin king, or a Buddha, fully enlightened. But the reign of chakravatin kings is over, so he would surely become a Buddha. And the prince would influence and help many, many people worldwide just like the sun’s rays.

And so it has come to pass and Buddha has indeed influenced many, many people around the globe. His reach seems to be similar to that of the sun’s rays after all.

43 Background Of Buddha

When Prince Siddhartha, Buddha, was younger and still living with his parents who ruled as King and Queen over lands in northern India, he learned sixty-four languages with different alphabets and excelled in math. He grew up excelling in traditional arts and sciences needing no instruction; however, he studied to please his father who then asked him to gain skill in sports; archery and martial arts, as well as academic subjects.

Prince Siddhartha liked to weave spiritual messages with normal everyday occurrences in order to encourage others to seek spiritual paths, often doing so through incredible displays or feats. For example, during an archery contest once, he readied his arrow, pulled back the bow and said, "With the bow of meditative concentration I will fire the arrow of wisdom and kill the tiger of ignorance in living beings." Then he released the arrow and it reportedly passed through a series of five iron tigers and seven trees, then deep underground, lost forever.

The Prince also liked to travel to the capital city in his parent’s kingdom to see how the people lived. Often he would encounter many elderly and sick people, even death. Such travels later led him to enlightenment about how everyone, without exception, is prone to human suffering; everyone will face some type of combination of sickness, aging and death. And his beliefs in reincarnation meant to him that these sufferings would continue again and again and again, as each person was reincarnated.

Depressing negative thoughts about suffering lead Prince Siddhartha to seek a remedy for everyone, something that would rid everyone of pain and end suffering. With all his learning and wisdom attained thus far in life, the young Prince realized that the only way to gain knowledge of such a huge remedy would be to gain more wisdom. So he decided to leave his family’s home, retiring in silent meditation in a forested area.

However, when people started learning about the departure plans of their prince, they encouraged his father, their King, to arrange marriage, to see if that would help him change his mind and stay. So the King chose a daughter from Yasodhara, a respected Shakya family.

However, Prince Siddhartha, wanted no worldly attachments that to him would be like beautiful poisonous flowers that attract, then cause pain and eventual death. So he married to please his father, but still ended up leaving to seek the remedy to all pain and suffering as originally planned, even though his father still tried other means to get his son to stay home, like surrounding him with beautiful women and even posted guards to block his leaving.

All was in vain, though, as a trusted aide helped the Prince escape while all the guards mysteriously slept through the episode. The Prince then dismounted some six miles out, said goodbye to his helpers, cut off his hair and tossed it into the air.

Legend has it that a god from the Land of the Thirty-three Heavens accepted the hair and offered the prince some saffron robes, a religious mendicant. And the prince ordained himself, becoming a monk, by accepting the robes in exchange for his own royal clothing.

42 Using Buddhist Meditation Techniques

Buddhist meditation techniques are some of the oldest practiced forms of meditation in the world. The universally known symbol of meditation has become a picture of Buddha in repose, carried away by the deep meditation in which he is engaged. Attaining the same peace and enlightenment suggested by the pose of Buddha is something that anyone can pursue. One does not have to follow the Buddhist faith or engage in any other Buddhist practices to use Buddhist meditation techniques.

Buddhist meditation techniques are designed so that the practitioner is able to separate their physical bodies from their conscious minds in order to cast their minds to a higher plateau of existence and thus receive enlightenment in their lives. To do so, one must leave behind the toils and worries of everyday life and instead pursue the higher path to achieving peace and understanding with and in the world around.

There are several main types of Buddhist meditation that you can pursue when you are looking to achieve peace, relaxation and understanding in your own life. The first technique is called the Mindfulness of Breathing. During this type of Buddhist meditation, the practitioner must so fully relax their physical body that the only function they concentrate on is their own pattern of breathing. But putting an entire being's focus just on the repetitions of breathing in and breathing out and breathing in and breathing out, one can successfully move to a higher plane of consciousness where the physical pains of life are not intrusive.

Another main type of Buddhist meditation includes Contemplation of Impermanence. During this type of Buddhist meditation, the practitioner must direct their mind to reflect upon the complete impermanence of life, which cycles through death and living and death and living continuously as a matter of sustaining mankind. By contemplating the mysteries of the impermanence of life, practitioners of Buddhist meditation are able to remove themselves from every day worries and instead exist at a conscious level where they are simply filled with the power of existing.

One of the most commonly used practices of Buddhist meditation includes visualization. During visualization, you will pick an object to picture in your own mind. The object can be nearly anything at all, but it must be something that you can visual in an all-consuming matter. During visualization, you will leave behind all conscious thoughts and all conscious words and simply focus on a mental picture of your chosen object. When you do so, you will be able to move beyond the physical plane and instead to a state where you become at one with the world around you.

41 Learn About the History of Meditation

The history of meditation is long and varied. Various cultures around the world have engaged in a plethora of practices throughout millennia of existence that can be considered forms of meditation. Most major religions have embraced the practice of mediation in various forms through out history, and non-religious movements have also followed in the practices of attaining enlightenment and a sense of peace with the world as a whole through meditation techniques. Because there are so many forms of meditation in which one can engage, the history of meditation is not one linear focus but instead a study of the various forms of meditation itself.

In artifacts that date to thousands of years in the past, there is evidence that meditation was practices throughout the world. In Eastern cultures, meditation practices including Zen meditation, Buddhist meditation and Tantra meditation have been practiced over many millennia. Even before those forms of meditation evolved, however, history speculates that meditation was an integral part of every day life. When studying the history of meditation, researchers have found that in hunting and gathering cultures, the practice of sitting around a communal fire by light and allowing the hypnotic affect of flame to take over, people may have been practicing meditation for as long as consciousness existed. The link between primitive cultures and meditative states is well supported by ancient forms of writing and artifacts that have been found and studied over time. In any occurrence where a practitioner uses any technique or substance to separate their conscious minds from their physical bodies, meditation is in practice.

Eastern cultures are thought to have developed meditation techniques hundreds of years before Western cultures. Through the teachings of Buddha, followers were able to understand the one of the greatest achievements in life is the obtaining of enlightenment. Through Buddhist meditation techniques, practitioners are able to leave behind every day worries and concerns and instead turn their contemplate inwards to the core of their own being, or outwards, towards the contemplation of the greater world that surrounds them. In either case, meditation became integral part of Eastern religions many centuries ago.

Within Western cultures, there is evidence of Christian monks and priests practicing various forms of deep prayer and relaxation techniques that lead to the practice of meditation. When a monk or priest becomes so elevated that they have ceased to worry about physical needs and are only contemplating the goodness of the world around them through the practices of common prayers, they have truly achieved a beneficial state of meditation.

Every day usage of meditation techniques in the world did not come about until the twentieth century. Within the history of meditation, this is still a very new occurrence, but as meditation continues to gain popularity, a greater population of people will be exposed to its lasting benefits.

39 Plant Sterols - The Secret for the Heart Health Benefits of the Acai Berries

The acai berries contain a chemical class known as plant sterols in abundance. Plant sterols, or phytosterols, have long been known to improve the cardiac health in humans apart from several other benefits. People who subsist on a diet of plant foods that are rich in sterols are known to have a better heart longevity than other people and they are also better protected from other cardiovascular problems such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, coronary heart disease and the risk of seizures. In fact, the benefits of plant sterols are so prominently accepted in today's health-conscious world that manufacturers of several food products are actually going ahead and fortifying their foods with both natural and synthetic plant sterols. However, the benefits that these products contain are always of a very dubious nature.

This is where acai berries score greatly. These berries are renowned for several health benefits, but one of the most important benefits that they carry is the presence of a high concentration of plant sterols. There are various sterol compounds presently, but it is most important to speak about beta-sitosterol, which occupies up to 70 to 90% of the total sterol content in the acai berries. Beta-sitosterol is a compound that is chemically quite similar to cholesterol (which is also a sterol, by the way), but it has a very peculiar action on cholesterol. It can act with the cholesterol that is present in the blood and reduce its density. Thus, beta-sitosterol works in the metabolism of cholesterol in the body so that it does not tend to accumulate.

Cholesterol is the main culprit behind most of the heart diseases prevalent in the human race. It can accumulate in the lumens (bores) of the arteries and thus reduce the flow of blood in them. If the cholesterol accumulates in the coronary artery (the artery leading to the heart), it can reduce the blood flow to the heart, which will result in impaired heart function. In time, the excess pressure on the heart can give rise to diseases and even risks of heart seizure. If the accumulation is built into any other artery of the body, then it can give rise to high blood pressure, which again is a very dangerous condition. With the help of the plant sterols present in it, acai berries ensure that a person having their diet can lead a healthier life with benefits to cardiac health.

Acai berries have been hailed for several benefits in recent times, but the most important benefit seems to be their effectiveness in reducing harmful cholesterol from the body. This is in light of the fact that the greatest share in world mortality today is of heart-related problems. It is conjectured that if all people of the world were to go on an acai berry diet, then the human mortality would drastically come down. Also, the fact that the acai berries can act at reversing some of the aging symptoms and make the person 'feel' younger and not just 'look' younger, these berries are being looked upon a potential source for a healthy heart and a prolonged life.

36 The Benefits of Massage

Bodywork Goes Beyond Relaxation

As you lie on the table under crisp, fresh sheets, hushed music draws you into the moment. The smell of sage fills the air and you hear the gentle sound of massage oil being warmed in your therapist's hands. Once the session gets underway, the daily stressors and aching muscles fade into an oblivious 60 minutes of relief, and all you can comprehend right now is not wanting it to end.

But what if that hour of massage did more for you than just take the pressures of the day away? What if that gentle, Swedish massage helped you combat cancer? What if bodywork helped you recover from a strained hamstring in half the time? What if your sleep, digestion, and mood all improved with massage and bodywork? What if these weren't just "what if's"?

Evidence is showing that the more massage you can allow yourself, the better you'll feel. Here's why:

Massage as a healing tool has been around for thousands of years in many cultures. Touching is a natural human reaction to pain and stress, and for conveying compassion and support. When you bump your head or have a sore calf, the natural response is to rub it to feel better. The same was true of our earliest ancestors.

Healers throughout time and throughout the world have instinctually and independently developed a wide range of therapeutic techniques using touch. Many are still in use today, and with good reason. We now have scientific proof of the benefits of massage -- benefits ranging from treating chronic diseases and injuries to alleviating the growing tensions of our modern lifestyles. Having a massage does more than just relax your body and mind -- there are specific physiological and psychological changes that occur, and even more so when massage is utilized as a preventative, frequent therapy and not simply mere luxury. Massage not only feels good, but it can cure what ails you.

The Fallout of Stress

Experts estimate that 80 percent to 90 percent of disease is stress-related. Massage and bodywork is there to combat that frightening number by helping us remember what it means to relax. The physical changes massage brings to your body can have a positive effect in many areas of your life. Besides increasing relaxation and decreasing anxiety, massage lowers blood pressure, increases circulation, improves injury recovery, encourages deep sleep, and increases concentration. It reduces fatigue and gives you more energy to handle stressful situations.

Massage is a perfect elixir for good health, but it can also provide an integration of body and mind. By producing a meditative state or heightened awareness of the present moment, massage can provide emotional and spiritual balance, bringing with it true relaxation and peace.

The incredible benefits of massage are doubly powerful if taken in regular "doses." Researchers from the Touch Research Institute (TRI) at the University of Miami, found that recipients of massage can benefit even in small doses (15 minutes of chair massage or a half-hour table session). They also note that receiving bodywork two to three times a week is even more beneficial. While this may not be feasible, it's nice to know that this "medicine" only gets better with frequency.

What It Does

In an age of technical and, at times, impersonal medicine, massage offers a drug-free, non-invasive, and humanistic approach based on the body's natural ability to heal itself. Following is a brief list of the many known, research-based benefits of massage and bodywork:

Increases circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs,

Stimulates the flow of lymph, the body's natural defense system, against toxic invaders. For example, in breast cancer patients, massage has been shown to increase the cells that fight cancer. Furthermore, increased circulation of blood and lymph systems improves the condition of the body's largest organ -- the skin,

Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles,

Reduces spasms and cramping,

Increases joint flexibility,

Reduces recovery time and helps prepare the body for strenuous workouts, reducing subsequent muscle pain of athletes at any level,

Releases endorphins -- the body's natural painkiller -- and is proving very beneficial in patients with chronic illness, injury, and post-op pain,

Reduces post-surgery adhesions and edema and can be used to reduce and realign scar tissue after healing has occurred,

Improves range-of-motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain,

Relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication,

Provides exercise and stretching for atrophied muscles and reduces shortening of the muscles for those with restricted range of motion,

Assists with shorter labor for expectant mothers, as well as reduces the need for medication, eases postpartum depression and anxiety, and contributes to a shorter hospital stay.

The benefits of massage are diverse. No matter how great it feels, massage isn't just a luxury, it's a health necessity.

34 Free Your Mind of Stress

I know that many of you will be thinking what will meditation do for me, why is it so important and of course 'I don't have time to sit around trying to clear my head, I'm busy'. Well let's be honest here, do you suffer from stress, now think about this a little more, because the answer is yes and if you're not sure about that read on and think a little more...and don't forget to check out my recommendation for easy stress relief.

Why Are We All Stressed?

With modern day living comes the hectic and ever demanding pace of live, it's no wonder that many of us feel stressed and overworked and how many of us take this home with us, how many others feel the impact of the stress we feel?

Our stress and tiredness of everyday life lead us to the feelings of unhappiness, frustration and a lack of patience when it comes to dealing with even the most simple every day routines. Not to mention the impact that all this has on our health, the tiredness that we feel, the ever nagging inner voice reminding us that we need to do this and that and the other. Or the demands of our boss, our clients, our family and friends all add up to making life one big stress ball.

'I'm stressed out', 'work is one big stress', 'I'm under too much stress', 'the kids are stressing me out', these are all phrases that we are all too familiar with and it is also an acceptable part of every day life.

How Do I Define My Stress?

Stress is hard to define as it means different things to different people; however, one thing that is perfectly clear to all of us is that stress is a negative emotion, negative energy as opposed to positive.

Stress can be both physical and mental. Physical stress could be the result of a lack of sleep, or a poor diet and even an effect of an illness. Mental stress can be worrying about money, or how you're going to survive retirement, or from experiencing a devastatingly emotional event such as the death of a family member, or being fired from work.

Our Natural Stress Response System

But did you know that much of our stress comes from less dramatic everyday routines. Obligations and pressures which are both physical and mental are not always that obvious to us and in response to these daily strains our body automatically invokes a stress response which floods your body with chemicals which increases your blood pressure, your heart rate, the blood flow to your muscles, your metabolism and your respiration. All of these responses are natural reactions so that our bodies are ready to react quickly and effectively under high pressure situations, termed fight or flight. Now whilst a stress response is useful in true emergency situations when you need to be on alert, it can considerably wear your body down when constantly active.

We are all continuously reacting to stressful situations, which is termed stress response, but without making adjustments in our lives to counter the effects. Stress can cause physical, emotional and behavioral disorders which affect our health, vitality and peace of mind; and of course it also affects our personal and professional relationships. Stress is also the key cause to many minor illnesses such as insomnia, headaches and backaches on top of the life threatening diseases such as high blood pressure and even heard disease.

It is also very true that every person handles stress differently, take for example a major life decision like changing careers, or moving house. I know some of you are cringing at the thought, but I also know that some of you would relish the thought. Whatever may be overwhelming to some people might actually be seen as a welcome change to others. An even simpler example is sitting in traffic, some people find this too much to tolerate tooting their horns and screaming out for more coffee, whilst others just take it in their stride maybe with the help of a little music, or a happy thought.

So what's the answer? Well, aside from the inexhaustible amount of drugs available to reduce stress, which include free side effects I may add, there's one very simple and natural way to reduce stress that takes 10 to 20 minutes of your day and has no side effects, meditation.

Our Natural Relaxation Response System

Earlier I mentioned that the secret to reducing your stress is by making adjustments in your life to counter the effects of stress, well this is done by evoking a relaxation response within you.

A relaxation response is a state of deep rest that is the opposite of the stress response. The relaxation response brings your body back into balance by deepening your breathing, reducing the stress chemicals in your body, slowing down your heart rate and relaxing your muscles. It also increases your energy, improves your focus, relieves headaches and other aches and pains, heightens your problem solving skills and boosts motivation and productivity and the best news is that with a little practice anyone can gain from these benefits.

Recommendations

As many of you out there are new to meditation and I am certain that there are also many of you who don't want to get into depth of how to meditate or what form of meditation to use and want a quick head start, I would recommend you begin with an affordable audio meditation. I use several and one that is particularly good for stress relief is Totally Tranquil by Holothink and you can pick up a free ten minute demonstration by clicking on, or copying and pasting this link into your browser: http://holothink.com/hg/?a=V1L0R1YlpM

also increases energy and focus, combats illness, relieves aches and pains, heightens problem-solving abilities, and boosts motivation and productivity. Best of all - with a little practice - anyone can reap these benefits.

deepening your breathing, reducing stress hormones, slowing down your heart rate and blood pressure, and relaxing your muscles.

a state of deep rest that is the polar opposite of the stress response.
this is known as Just ten or twenty minutes a day of meditation will bring relief from chronic stress and also increase your tolerance to it.

Remember, each person handles stress differently. Some people actually seek out situations which may appear stressful to others. A major life decision, such as changing careers or buying a house, might be overwhelming for some people, while others may welcome the change. Some find sitting in traffic too much to tolerate, while others take it in stride. The key is determining your personal tolerance levels for stressful situations.
Stress can cause physical, emotional and behavioral disorders which can affect your health, vitality, peace-of-mind, as well as personal and professional relationships. Too much stress can cause relatively minor illnesses like insomnia, backaches, or headaches, and can contribute to potentially life-threatening diseases like high blood pressure and heart disease.

Stress can also be mental: when you worry about money, a loved oneÕs illness, retirement, or experience an emotionally devastating event, such as the death of a spouse or being fired from work.
However, much of our stress comes from less dramatic everyday responsibilities. Obligations and pressures which are both physical and mental are not always obvious to us. In response to these daily strains your body automatically increases blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, metabolism, and blood flow to you muscles. This response, is intended to help your body react quickly and effectively to a high-pressure situation.

With the hectic pace and demands of modern life, many people feel stressed and over-worked. It often feels like there is just not enough time in the day to get everything done. Our stress and tiredness make us unhappy, impatient and frustrated. It can even affect our health. We are often so busy we feel there is no time to stop and meditate! But meditation actually gives you more time by making your mind calmer and more focused. A simple ten or fifteen minute breathing meditation as explained below can help you to overcome your stress and find some inner peace and balance.

Meditation can also help us to understand our own mind. We can learn how to transform our mind from negative to positive, from disturbed to peaceful, from unhappy to happy. Overcoming negative minds and cultivating constructive thoughts is the purpose of the transforming meditations found in the Buddhist tradition. This is a profound spiritual practice you can enjoy throughout the day, not just while seated in meditation.

33 The Origins of Meditation

Okay, so where does meditation originate? Well, meditation is an ancient spiritual practice that has been around for thousands of years, it incorporates contemporary mind-body techniques for relaxing the body and calming the mind and for releasing stress. Its origins lie in Asian religious practices form counties such as India, China and Japan, but can also me found in many other cultures around the world in many differing forms.

Until recently the primary role of meditation was that of a religious one; however, in more recent times the health benefits of meditation have become more prominent in western culture and this has facilitated its spread across the globe. Although the benefits of meditation were known to those cultures who have been practicing the art for thousands of years, it was not until 1970 that the first articles on the health benefits of meditation started to appear in western civilization appearing firstly in the journal of Transpersonal Psychology.

It may surprise you to hear that there are literally dozens of meditation techniques available and it can be a daunting task to find out which one is right for you, but essentially meditation comes in two forms and all techniques fall into either one of two classifications, concentrative meditation and mindfulness meditation, or in the case of some techniques such as Vipassana Meditation, which is one of India‘s most ancient techniques, your technique utilizes both.

Concentrative meditation focuses your attention on your breathing using an image, or a sound, which is known as a mantra in order to quiet the mind and allow for a greater awareness of clarity to be evoked. In simple terms it‘s like taking a look at a forest and then we narrow our vision and focus purely on a selected tree and even a particular branch or a leaf of that tree, see it‘s all about focus and removing everything surrounding that one focal point so that it is the only thing left and we are intently focused upon it.

Mindfulness meditation involves opening up your attention and making yourself aware of the continuous influx of sensations and feelings, images, thoughts, sounds, smells and so on without getting involved with actually thinking about them. You are focusing as a viewer and not as a participant and simply witness whatever comes into your mind without reacting, or getting involved in your thoughts, memories or worries. As opposed to the focus of one tree in a huge forest, you are aware of the forest in its entirety.

It can also bring focus and clarity, and often, after meditating, problems that you have been struggling with, miraculously become solved. Meditation has also been known to inspire people to write, and to spur lucrative business ideas, as your subconscious comes to light.

One simple form of meditation, requires you to sit in a quiet room, either on a pillow, or cross-legged on the floor, or in a comfortable chair, making sure your spine is straight. It is advised that you use the same place every day. It is also suggested that you personalize your spot, by beautifying it with candles, flowers, and pictures of the people that you love.

The idea is to sit quietly, with your eyes closed, and focus on a point inside of your forehead. Try not to think of anything in particular, but don't try 'not' to think either, allowing your mind to become calm, and peaceful. If you find that your mind is 'chattering', don't try to control it, just let it finish what it is that it is working on, it will eventually quiet down. It is also recommended for beginners to begin with ten to twenty minute sessions, each day. After awhile of doing this, you will start to feel deep relaxation and joy during these sessions.

The first step to this self-hypnosis is to sit in a quiet, comfortable spot, making sure you are facing a wall about eight feet away from you. Pick a spot or object on that wall, and make that spot or object your focal point. Looking at your focal point, begin counting backwards from 100, one number for each breath you exhale. As you do this, imagine yourself floating, and feeling very relaxed. You will begin to feel your eyelids getting heavy, and may begin to blink. Let your eyes slowly close, and as you continue to count backwards, imagine yourself as limp as a ragdoll, totally relaxed, and floating in a safe and comfortable place. Stop counting, and just float in your space. If any disturbing thoughts should come while in your space, just let them flow out again, and allow yourself to continue to feel safe and relaxed. This technique can help you to cope with stress, and discharge the tension that accumulates during stressful situations.

When you are ready to come out of this self-hypnosis, you can either let yourself drift off to sleep, or you can count from one to three and exit. First, count one, and get yourself ready to exit. At two, take a deep breath, and hold for a few seconds. At three, exhale and open your eyes slowly. As you open your eyes, continue to hold on to that relaxed and comfortable feeling.

You may then want to increase the length of your sessions to thirty minutes, or maybe even an hour. In our highly active lifestyles of today, it is imperative that we include a brief time for meditation in our daily schedule.

32.Choosing Healthy Chocolate

Abstaining from chocolate is surely not an easy feat. The joy of chocolate is just too hard to resist even when it is loaded with sugar that obviously takes a toll on our health. Luckily, recent studies have shown that chocolate has tons of health benefits, particularly dark chocolate because it contains higher levels of cocoa and thus contain more antioxidants that’s even higher than black tea and red wine. Still, sugar levels in milk chocolate and white chocolate is enough to give the diabetic a heart attack. Even chocolates that are marketed as sugarless or sugar-free still contain maltitol, which is almost as bad as sugar. Is it possible to consume chocolate in its pure yummy goodness without consuming the carbohydrates and alarmingly high sugar? With a little ingenuity, it’s possible!

The Nutritious Content of Chocolate

Unsweetened chocolate contains about 8 grams of carbohydrate and around 145 calories, more than half of it is fiber, which is very good for the stomach and for aiding digestion. Chocolate, particularly unsweetened chocolate, also contains lots of minerals. One ounce of unsweetened chocolate contains about a quarter of the magnesium and iron, and about half of the manganese and copper that our body needs in a day. The fat contained in chocolate, when it is made of pure cocoa butter (and not animal fat or vegetable fat), is healthy fat—either stearic acid or monounsaturated fat, both considered to be “good saturated fat.” Three table spoons, or about 36 calories of unsweetened cocoa powder, has the same amount of fiber and carbohydrates as unsweetened chocolate but has lower levels of vitamins and minerals,. However, it also has much less fat content.

Appreciating Unsweetened Chocolate

The Maya and Aztecs, the earliest civilizations known to have consumed chocolate, used to drink unsweetened chocolate spiked up with some chile and spices. It was considered a drink for the royal family and was adopted by the Spanish courts. Unsweetened chocolate also makes a wonderful ingredient for unusual but interesting dishes such as Cincinnati Chili and Mexican mole sauces. It adds a fuller and richer flavor to dishes that blends well with sauces without being too distinct, plus it adds a wonderful aroma. When it comes to desserts and sweets, it’s harder to go totally unsweetened. Unsweetened cocoa has a really bitter taste that may be too string for most people’s palate. Artificial sweeteners are available, such as maltitol and other sugar alcohols. However, maltitol is about the same as regular sugar when it comes to its blood sugar impact, so using it as a sugar substitute may be defeating the point. While we want to find a healthy alternative to sweetening chocolate, we don’t want to sacrifice depth of flavor and mouthfeel. Sugar alcohols can provide the same characteristics as regular sugar to chocolates. It counteracts the bitterness of chocolate wonderfully better than artificial sweeteners. Sugar alcohols are not all alike though. When buying sugar-free milk chocolates, use sugar alcohols that have the least impact on blood sugar such as erythritol. A healthy, but still yummy alternative is diabetic chocolate.

31.Fish Oil - An Omega 3 Fatty Acid - Why Is It So Important To Our Health?

While health experts argue the benefits of some health supplements, the evidence continues to mount in favor of fish oil. Fish and fish oil supplements supply us with the Omega 3 fatty acids that are needed for heart and brain health. Even the American Heart Association strongly endorses the use of fish oil for cardiovascular health. Why? Because those with diets rich in Omega 3 fats are less likely to have high blood pressure or irregular heart rhythms, and are less likely to die from heart attacks or strokes.

Omega 3 fatty acids are also beneficial for brain health. The human brain is more than sixty percent structural fat. But, the type of fat needed for the brain to function properly is Omega 3 fatty acids. According to recent research, decreasing your intake of Omega 6 fats (primarily vegetable oils) along with increasing Omega 3 fatty acids, reduces the risk of depression, aggressive behavior, attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia and lowers your risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Other current studies with Omega 3 fats have shown benefits with regards to cancer, inflammatory diseases, diabetes and other health related conditions.

Of course we all know that there are good fats and bad fats. Any artificially produced fat, called transfats, are not good for us and saturated fats should always be kept at a minimum.

But there is a type of fat called EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids) that are not only good for you but essential for normal growth and development. Furthermore, your body can’t manufacture them, so you must get them from your diet. Essential Fatty Acids are polyunsaturated and are grouped into Omega 6 and Omega 3’s.

Although both types of Omegas are essential for health, experts agree that our diet ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids is greatly unbalanced. While our ancestor’s diets consisted of a diet ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 of about 1:1, our modern dietary habits now reflect a ratio closer to 20:1 to 50:1.

According to Dr. Donald Rudin, author of Omega 3 Oils, fatty acids are the main structural components of every cell membrane in the body, and therefore influence every process in the cell. He concludes that a balanced intake of essential fatty acids is necessary for both healthy cell function and a sense of well-being.

The permeability of the cell depends on the essential fatty acids. This allows nutrients into the cell and toxins to escape. When we rely on other fats to do the job required of Omegas 3 fats the structure of the membrane of each cell becomes stiff and unable to remain healthy enough to do its job.

The primary sources of Omega 6 fats are canola, soy, corn, safflower and sunflower oil. These oils are overabundant in the typical diet, which explains our excess Omega 6 levels. Omega 3 fats are typically found in flaxseed, walnuts and fish.

The Omega 3 fatty acids found in cold-water fish, such as tuna, salmon, trout and mackerel consists of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Omega 3’s in the form of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) can be found in flaxseed and walnut oils, and seaweed. However, the body must convert ALA to DHA and EPA to derive the heart & brain healthy benefit. This conversion however, is often difficult for some people to make. Therefore getting your Omega 3 fat acids directly from cold water fish or fish oil supplements may be your best bet.

30.Universal Principles of Yoga (Part 6)

It is every Yoga student’s prerogative to choose a style of Yoga or a Guru that fits his or her needs. However, if you ever find a Guru who does not embrace spiritual health, what does that tell you?

In all religions, it is believed singing or chanting prayers, hymns, or Japa, will bring about salvation. Within the Vedas, the verses are also called mantras. To go a bit further, every religion practices a form of Mantra or Japa. If you have been to a church, temple, shrine, ashram, or mosque, you will hear prayers, chanting, and singing. So, what happened to the concept that Yoga is not a spiritual practice? Well, it is, but some popular physical forms do not address spiritual health. Pilates is a popular "Yoga off shoot" that does not address spiritual health. Some of the contemporary Hatha Yoga styles do not contain much spiritual benefit. I teach Chair Yoga classes for physical and mental benefits only. However, as you can see, by what you have previously read, many of the main Indian Yoga styles do address mental, physical, and spiritual health. The main point is that these forms of Yoga are not threatening to any religion at all. Yoga can be practiced by anyone of any religion, without the worry of a conflict. Now, if you are an atheist, you may prefer to practice a form of Yoga that will not enhance your spiritual health. It is every Yoga student’s prerogative to choose a style of Yoga or a Guru that fits his or her needs. However, if you ever find a Guru who does not embrace spiritual health, what does
that tell you? Let’s look at a few other points of interest found in Mantra Yoga. The Mantra Yogi has three methods of practice. They are Balkhari, Upanshu, and Manasik. The Balkari method is chanting in a voice that can easily be heard. The immediate benefit is to withdraw into meditation easily. It is much easier to meditate when you can remove outside thoughts, problems, and concerns. The Upanshu form of chanting is performed in a low voice, similar to a whisper. The Manasik form of chanting is one of my personal favorites and can be performed mentally. Some consider this to be difficult, but it does lead to higher states of consciousness. Since this is such a "low key" form of Japa, you can easily fit it into your busy day. If you pray in silence during the day, you have already practiced in this way. Some Mantra Yogis use a Rosary or "Mala." Most of the Malas that I have seen have 109 beads. The 109th offset bead is known as a Sumeru or Guru. This is where Japa begins and ends. Also worthy of note, is that Roman Catholics use a Rosary for prayers and meditation. This is also a deeply spiritual practice. The Mala or Rosary has been a helpful tool for enhancement of spiritual health regardless of which culture you are from or which religion you practice. ฉ Copyright 2006 - Paul Jerard / Aura Publications
